Just double checking the cheapest way to do an open off peak return from Wakefield to Birmingham this weekend is to do Wakefield - Derby then Derby - Birmingham?

Returning same day, or day after?

How comfortable are you using tickets where you may need to explain them to a guard?

Departing today and returning Monday...I'm quite happy to use such tickets although I find CrossCountry guards can be a bit of a battle* at times!

*Not judging any of you of course :D

I've done it with a split at Derby and/or Chesterfield in the past

For same day trips I usually buy a day return Wakefield-Sheffield, then use a Derbyshire Wayfarer to Burton, then a day return Burton-Birmingham, but I have not done it for a while and it also depends whether you want Anytime tickets or are able to comply with the Off-Peak restrictions for all or part of the journey. Also not all trains stop at Burton which can be a constraint.

Sorry, just seen that you said weekend, so you are free from the Off-Peak restrictions.

The problem with the term "open" is that it used to refer to a ticket type that was valid on any train at any time without restriction and valid for a month. This ticket type is now called "Anytime Return" and isn't what you require.

However booking engines started using it to refer to any ticket type which was valid on a choice of trains at times which may be heavily restricted and may only allow travel on the same day, ie. a (Super) Off Peak Day Return would be included in that definition. That isn't what you require either as you're returning a different day.

So it's best avoided as it's effectively become a meaningless, confusing term.

For same day trips....
Not applicable in this case as he's returning the day after, but you're right that is the cheapest sensible combination for this journey if it was made to return the same day and without using ticketing "loopholes"!
