Sky News is reporting two serious collisions involving service buses today, one involving a Go Ahead vehicle hitting a tree in London, and another in the Midlands in which two buses reportedly collided head-on.

Their item carries an image of the London incident, which shows an MCV bodied single decker (07 plated, I presume MAN or Dart?) having seemingly well and truly left the carriageway and collided hard with a tree. Significant front end damage and various injuries reported.

Midlands crash involved two Nat Ex motors, an OmniLink single decker and a Wright bodied double deck, with 11 injured and both drivers reportedly needing cutting free.

Three less buses on our roads then :(

That particular MCV Evolution, ED23, is on a 10.2m E200 chassis with the usual Euro 4 Cummins engine. It also happens to be one I took a photo of last year .

Go Ahead London actually have three variants of them
ED1-8: 06-reg with 10.8m length on the Dart chassis and Euro 3 Cummins engine.
ED9-17: 56-reg with 9.4m length on the E200 chassis and Euro 4 Cummins engine.
ED18-28: 07-reg with 10.2m length on the E200 chassis and Euro 4 Cummins engine.

Hope the driver and all passengers make a quick recovery from their injuries in this awful accident.

Are bus crashes becoming more frequent or just hitting the headlines more ?

I don't think they happen any more frequently. In fact, I suspect the number is actually decreasing. However, the social media era that we now live in, means that they perhaps become known to a wider audience more readily. Such incidents rarely make the national headlines on traditional media outlets.

My goodness it happened at quite some speed!

Considering it was apparently a tight road, I wonder whether the speed of the decker will come up in the investigation.

My guess would be driver incapacitated. The decker makes no apparent attempt at slowing or avoiding the stationary bus, and the brakes weren't applied even after impact - it shunts the single decker slowly backward until it runs out of momentum.

Or a mechanical fault?

Yes - I can't imagine the driver of the decker was actually trying to go through the gap at that speed!

Also notice the passenger in the white shirt on the top deck. Surprised he didn't go through the front window to be honest!

What are the odds of the number of whiplash claims wildly exceeding the number of people on the buses?

My father-in-law, aged 85, was thrown about fifteen feet forward from his seat and broke his hip when his PrestonBus single decker had to brake hard to avoid a white van. This injury and the subsequent buck-passing between insurance companies had a deleterious effect on the rest of his life, though he did live to receive an adequate pay-out, not that it in any way compensated ffor having to give up independent living, etc. So please don;t assume all claims are false or exaggerated ones.

Quite, my specialism is collision analysis in civil engineering, the scale of injuries from relatively minor collisions can be horrific, even with what I've seen and heard, I'm still staggered at what I get to hear about collisions from attending police officers. Thankfully I don't often get to know the grim details, but it's easy for the casual outsider to forget that we aren't a game character that can be simply reset. I recall standing next to a chap in a pub one night many moons ago, he took what soundly like a minor punch to the face from some idiot drunk, I saw the chap several days later, his facial injuries and bruising were unbelievable for me at that time. Thankfully the thug was stupid enough to come back to the same pub, was spotted and a call made to the police.

I was obviously too subtle for you to understand my post.

By suggesting there might be more claims than passengers I was (obviously too indirectly for you) implying that people not on the bus might put in false claims.

I've no problem with anyone on the bus making a claim if they have a valid one, and looking at the chap on the top deck, many may well have one.

I resent your assertion that I think all claims are false or exaggerated.

I receive error message: The video you are trying to watch is using the HTTP Live Streaming protocol which is only supported in iOS devices.

Does anyone have any tech advice please? I'm not an iPhone user and don't wish to be.

Worked fine on my Sony Experia M2 (Android)...

Works fine on my computer

Anybody able to work visually what the impact speed would have been? I'd say quite a bit as the single decked bus is pushed far back and some upper deck passengers are thrown from their seats

It traveled the length of the red car (possibly a 3dr corsa) in approx 1/2 second (rough timing, couldn't time it any more accurate.

3dr corsa = 402.1cm length, so approx 8 metres/second which I believe is about 18mph. The force of a heavy object hitting at 18mph is massive though

Another, in Rochdale. Some nasty injuries on this occasion.

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co...s/seventeen-injured-roof-torn-double-10019861
One person has been seriously hurt in the crash that happened at a railway bridge on Milkstone Road

A roof of a double-decker bus was torn off during a collision on Wednesday lunchtime.

Here are some of the key points:

  • The crash happened on Milkstone Road in the town centre
  • 17 people have been injured, one passenger seriously injured - 11 of them have been taken to hospital.
  • Dozens of police, fire and ambulance crews were sent to the scene shortly before 12.30pm
  • Bus operator First Manchester says it doesn't know why the 17 service was not on its usual route....
37389, standard issue Volvo Gemini decker. Highly unlikely to be anything other than a write off I would think.

Another one occurred this morning, this time involving a Golden Eagle East Lancs Pyoneer-bodied Olympian hitting a Insignia while on a school run in Airdrie. 18 children were taken to hospital, but there were no serious injuries, thankfully.

18 children in hospital after bus crash in Airdrie

_85493480_bus_gv_blurred.jpg

Eighteen children were taken to hospital after a school bus and a car crashed in North Lanarkshire.
The double-decker and Vauxhall Insignia collided on Petersburn Road, near Dunrobin Primary, Airdrie, at 08:40.
Pupils from Caldervale High School and a four-year-old girl who was in the car were taken to Monklands and Wishaw Hospitals as a precaution.
The 17 school pupils were later released. The bus driver, 65, and car driver, 30, both men, were not injured.

Karen Kubica, head teacher of Caldervale High School, said: "There was an accident involving a school bus from Chapelhall and a car on Petersburn Road this morning at around 08:40.
"On receiving a report about the accident, school staff attended the scene of the accident immediately to assist emergency services.
"The majority of pupils from the bus were able to be accompanied to school by school staff."

From the position of the car, that looks very much like the car driver ignored the give way marks on the side road and pulled out thinking that the bus driver would give way to the right?

The give way system is there for a reason!

Stagecoach 17692 was similar damage last year, and was rebuilt as an open-topper. So, this too could be rebuilt as an open-topper.

Hopefully. The damage here though looks extensive; the rear end has suffered below just the level of the top deck windows for example. Could just be a case of a new rear end moulding being required of course.
