I uploaded a video from a Canon Legria HFR205 camera to YouTube the other day which appears to be running slightly faster than it should.

The only difference between that clip and the previous ones is that this new one was filmed in XP+ at 12mbs whereas the previous clips I have put on YouTube were all filmed on SP at 7mbs.

This was all on the same camera. I didn’t do anything different with the editing.

Is it possible that YouTube can’t cope with the higher setting or has a setting been changed on the camera somewhere that might explain this? If so, ideas as to which one would be very helpful please.

The link to the video in question is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi3WQMXfTAk

As you can see, it is clearly running slightly faster than real time.

Any ideas please? Canon just said to contact YouTube - which appears not to have an e-mail contact page anywhere that I can find???

Interesting.

How long is the original clip on the camera? The youtube clip is 1'45"
(actually a couple of frames less).
If it's the same length on the original, then it can't be playing faster.

That video and a couple of your previous ones I looked at on youtube are all playing at 29.97 fps as far as I can see, although your camera is a PAL standard one and records at 50 fps (even when set for progressive - Canon's 25P is actually recorded interlaced).

Did any of the previous ones look faster?

It's possible that youtube changes the framerate after you upload the video, but not using youtube myself I don't know.

The previous clips all look OK to me but this one with the wave splashes - it is visibly obvious when watching it that it's a little bit fast isn't it?

If YouTube changed the frame rate on this one, wouldn't they have done it on the others? Unless they've done it as a result of this clip having been filmed at a higher bit rate than the others?

The original clips are both around 50 secs long on my editing software, which pretty much matches the clip length - - so I'm really scratching my head here.

All my other non-slideshow clips were filmed on the same camera and edited in an identical manner. The only difference that I can think of at all is that the new clip was filmed at the higher quality level ( XP+ ) than the older ones ( SP ).

It is possible to report a playback issue on YouTube - on a Mac it's a cntl-click on the video (right click on PC?) That should bring up this dialogue

That might be worth a try, but you would need to tell them how it was uploaded and details of the file codec chosen.

You will pardon me for checking, are you absolutely sure its playing faster, not just more jerkily? Have have watched the original on the camera since uploading it to youtube?

I can't watch the original on the camera - once I had all the clips safely on the computer and verified their presence I cleared the SD card so that the wife could use the camera again...

A friend who has viewed the clip says it does look like the family are moving faster than they should; the effect is more apparent in the waves though.

I'll put another clip up that was filmed on the same day later this week and see what happens there; this one will be part of a walk on Headon Warren rather than what is basically standing still at the water's edge so any increase in speed will be even more apparent upon watching it.

Yes, I've seen the Google Comments page before, but I have never, ever, ever had a reply to anything I have sent to it.

Ah well, sorry about that useless suggestion then!

More positively - how about filming something like 1 minute of a stopwatch (or a clock with a second hand or a digital clock) using the old settings on the camera, then repeat for the higher quality settings and see what happens to both when uploaded?

Hmmm... there's a thought.... It might even go viral as well!

Well, I've put the Headon Warren walk clip up unfortunately it's not very good as my wife and daughter are prime sources of operator induced earthquake - so I've also added another beach scene that I filmed and that, too, appears to be running a bit fast.

Playing preview on the editing software suggests the responsibility is with the camera and not YouTube so I am going to carry out a test - two clips, one filmed on the 12mbs higher quality setting and one filmed on the previous 7mbs setting.

This will at least tell me if it's the quality setting or if something has been adjusted somewhere; if it's the former I'll simply leave it set on the 7mbs quality. If it's the latter, I'll then have to puzzle out exactly which setting has been changed!

It's a 16Gb SD card, the logo on it is PNY. it's the one that came with the camera.

Are you about to tell me that this type of card cannot cope with the higher quality setting?

On a technical level someone else is gonna have to provide that. From experience (not with a camera) the quality of the memory card can have an effect.

Recording video needs a decent write speed. Poor write speeds and bad sectors on the card etc can all affect the video.

Maybe worth changing the card to a SDHC Class 10 and then checking again. Or drop the quality of the video recording and then see if the problem still occurs.

Just had a look at the clip in all the available resolutions up to 720p and I would tend to agree with PaxVobiscum that it's more a motion judder issue as opposed to running speed which looks about right to my eyes, I see this on the majority of material (to a greater/lesser degree) that is uploaded to YouTube, with the exception being the professional/commercial material available on there.

Thank you; and yes I am uploading at 720.

I will report back after I have carried out my tests.
