Any more news on Ilkeston station?

This is due, I believe, to open in August 2015 so are their any updates on how the work is going? I believe work was suspended for a while due to the discovery of some rare birds in the area and possible implications of the car park on surface water run-off?

i believe it has been delayed again due to more great crested newts being discovered on site

Passing through on the train the other day there was nothing visible except some green barriers which I think are to prevent newts etc returning to the area after they have been removed.

Confirm nothing at mo, went past the site on Saturday. Picked up an EMT Norwich - Liverpool timetable leaflet recently and they have a few times published for Ilkeston with the footnote opening in 2015.

It's only taken 30 years to get this station reopened. Only kenilworth has taken longer. Pity it's not in Scotland they reopen lines to nowhere like Alloa and somewhere in the Borders.

Don't blame the Scots for actually getting their act together and doing something. Blame the DfT and successive Governments for not prioritising such reopenings (not to mention closing it in the first place).

I cycle past at least once a week and have seen some workmen present on one occasion since Easter. And no nothing has been done.
The new Derbyshire Train Times booklet makes no mention of a potential new station at Ilkeston, so presumably they don't expect anything to develop before the next book in December...

Well you cant do much work if you are waiting for the newts to come out of hibernation. They hibernate between about October and about Easter. You then need to round them all up and get the moved to a new location.

Until that happens you cant do any work as it is an offence to:

...Intentionally or recklessly damage, destroy or obstruct access to any structure or place used for shelter or protection by a northern crested newt (in practice this means both its breeding sites, and its terrestrial habitat)

Intentionally or recklessly disturb a northern crested newt while it is occupying a structure or place which it uses for that purpose......

(Regulation 39 of the Conservation (Natural Habitats etc.) Regulations 1994 (the Habitats Regulations), as amended by the Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c.) (Amendment) Regulations 2007)

Do you know if anything is happening on the down side of the line, where the remains of the original station building is/was?

Building a whole new line for Gorebridge - Tweedbank to serve essentially some sheep, while whole huge towns like Kenilworth, Ilkeston, Peterlee and so on forever remain unconnected is crackers. Look how many potential station sites there are in West Yorkshire alone without even needed any new track? The money frittered away on the largely uninhabited Borders - a solely politically motivated project, could have build them all with change.

On the Nottinghamshire side (up) the fences have been put up for the wildlife issue but other than vegetation clearance nothing has happened.
On the Derbyshire side (down) the old buildings on the scrapmans site have been cleared. Once that had been done I have not seen any other activity at all!

Kenilworth and Galashiels have the same populations, at around 22,000 people...

It's ironic that the rare species, the Great Crested Newt, seem to be present at every rail building project.
However they are an European rare species, but actually quite common in the UK

Been past today on the bus.
There is a digger on the Nottinghamshire side sat idling, and 3 men and a mini-digger on the Derbyshire site doing something.
One of the bus drivers commented they were probably digging for newts......

I read a report in a local rag recently that work would finally start late September, initially with prep work for site offices etc. so it looks like this time it's actually happened!

Apparently there will be two car parks, a smaller one on the town side for setting down and picking up, and (I think) for taxis, with the main one on the far side. The existing Station Road footbridge will be removed and replaced with a wider one, and I'm guessing this may have stepped access to the platforms, but I'm not certain about this.

I suspect this is as much to do with the rules on taxis as it is anything else - Ilkeston-based taxis (licensed in Derbyshire) would not be allowed to pick up passengers from a rank on the Nottinghamshire side of the railway.

Anyway, the boards at SHF said we were calling at ILN, but both the driver and guard said they didn't. I bailed at Dronfield so can't confirm if it actually did or not!
