Serious disruption in and around Camborne to bus services. Road closure as a result of a 12 year old girl knocked over by a police car earlier this morning.

Update at 3.30pm:- Road closure still in place on Trevenson Street near Red Jackets pub. Buses from Redruth diverted via North Roskear Rd, Eastern Lane and Wellington Rd (a former bus route) and not serving Roskear and Camborne Tesco. Buses to Redruth and beyond diverted via Union Street & Trelowarren St not serving Tolcarne St and Trevenson St.

Added to this the fire brigade were attending a house close to the bus station mid afternoon and Union St was partly blocked.

Please get some perspective.

The tragedy is NOT the road chaos. A 12 year old girl has been hospitalised with head injuries.

As the Western Morning News reported:

Superintendent Ian Drummond-Smith, responsible for local policing in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, said: “This is a terrible incident for everyone involved and we deeply apologise that this has happened and all of our thoughts are with the child and her family at this difficult time."

I don't think that people were saying that the congestion was the "real story". However, this is a transport forum and the impact of such incidents, whether it be this or the recent flooding, will naturally gravitate to the transport arena.

Don't think that is a reflection of individuals being disrespectful or flippant.

I'm sure that we all fully agree that the injury to the young girl must be devastating for the girl's relatives and friends. Also, I would spare a thought for the police personnel involved

As the OP, I assure you I did not mean to dismiss the incident to the girl as meaningless and irrelevant but was (as TGW says above) discussing the other effects to the bus services which may have been useful to anyone travelling in the area yesterday.

It was a terrible event which affected the girl and her family as well as the police offers involved.

As this is a bus forum I did not think there was any issue with my posting and stand by that. Sorry if you (busconductors) feel I may have been disrespectful but I disagree.

End of discussion.

richw - Watching live local TV coverage (ITV) at 6pm, it appeared that the road had reopened.

According to one of the supervisors at First that I spoke with earlier, a number of buses were late and out of position with workings subsequently switched around and some journeys cut short. I don't know on which routes this happened but the 14 & 18 was suffering with long gaps between buses at Camborne then 2 or 3 buses turning up at once heading the same way.

No idea if this was the reason for 34311 appearing but there were a number of Trident's at Camborne at the time 34311 appeared but none appeared to be in use.

Yesterday - 7th January, I saw both of Cornwall's oldest double deckers (excluding the open toppers) in service. 34138 was seen in Market Jew Street, Penzance around 08:45 en route to Land's End on route 1; 34311 was seen in Coinagehall Street, Helston at 11:45 en route to Penzance on route 2.

At least two deckers on the 14/18 today, seen from a distance travelling in the same direction (St Erth) as I took my dog for a walk in the Hayle estuary area, half an hour apart. Don't think I've ever seen two on one day before outside college times.

Think one of those must of been 33066 as it was on the 18 service yesterday

I saw this old Camborne based bus on Friday a few months after it was sold by First. T899 KLF is now operated by West Kent buses and is seen at Dartford on service 3 in fading light. Remnants still visible of it's previous service with First.

The 4 Caetano Darts are on loan to Taunton replacing the remaining non-DDA vehicles. 43867/8 working on Taunton town services today. 43859 at bus stn, 43860 at depot.
33099 broke down on M5 while heading to Camborne and has been dumped in depot yard. 32854 although it had an engine fitted at Worcester in late November broke it on M5 as well, and is now awaiting a replacement. It has been suggested 32854 will be staying at BoS and be joined by sister 32852.
Ex Plymouth Dart 42724 arrived in Taunton today destination screen removed and using trade plates.

First Kernow completes purchase of Webbers Coaches’ assets and contracts

First Kernow, part of First Bus, the UK's leading bus operator, has announced the purchase of various assets and contracts from Webbers Coaches, a small operation in Cornwall.

The transaction, which was completed on 5 January, includes the lease of the existing depot in Bodmin, a number of school contracts operated on behalf of Cornwall Council, four of the vehicles used by the business and the transfer by TUPE of seven employees.

Commenting, Alex Carter, Managing Director for First South West, said: “This transaction represents an excellent opportunity to strengthen and grow our business in the South West. Our new colleagues are already fitting in well to our First Kernow operation.”

I guess TT revisions and vehicle reallocations may follow as a result with vehicles for some routes being outstationed at Bodmin. What vehicles have been acquired then from Webbers (Bodmin)?

This now confirms the rumours.................

Already done - no timetable changes, but 2 x 27s running from Bodmin from 4 Jan. One Truro College coach has been there since September.

One 57 seat Plaxton Javelin, one short 57 seat UVG Javelin and one 70 seat UVG Javelin. plus the MPD are the vehicles acquired.

Only 3 of the Darts are on loan here, the other will go straight on to Cornwall.

Various expired Tridents with and due to be with FSW have been parked up now, as replacements are becoming available as from within UK Bus as double deck DDA plans evolve.

I like the description of a 57 seater as a short Javelin but know what you mean. :)

Thanks for the updates - as always, much appreciated. Heard reports that Summercourt has now started as an operational depot - does this mean that some of the Truro and Eden based work has moved, and that the Hendra outbase has been vacated?

Certainly, the transformation of First South West has been something pretty exceptional under AC and his team. I know you've alluded to it, and that progress has already been made, but here's hoping that it continues and that new vehicles appear this year (subject to the usual caveats etc)

An amount of Newquay and Eden work transferred to Summercourt along with the two lines to Bodmin. The short Javelin is short - 10m ex MOD.

Is that the beige / brown thing pictured at Summercourt on the Plymothian Transit website recently (7th January)?

I'd missed that but that was what I was thinking of.

As well as Maidstone, Weardale Motor Services had some 63 seaters in the 70's though they may have been on 12m chassis. United also converted a Leopard (12m) to a similar spec to give capacity whilst avoiding dupeing a route as said vehicle encountered a low bridge.

Forgive my ignorance, but where is the Webbers (now First) base in Bodmin?

I too would like to know this. As my wife and myself are visiting Devon & Cornwall in June, and the two addresses, I have for Webbers Coaches do not have any parking for coaches.
