I travelled on Sunday night on the Night Riviera to Penzance. We left Paddingon on time at 23.50 but came to a stand in the vicinity of Royal Oak until around 1.30 am. Arrival in Penzance was dead on time, but those joining at Reading must have had a rather long (and cold) wait. This isn't a complaint (the Night Riviera is without doubt the best train in Europe in my opinion), but I am genuinly interested as to why this happened - and if it was, in fact, planned.

I think that was the night the loco decided it didnt want to leave London so another loco was sent out to Reading to perform a loco swap, departure from |reading was just a bit late.

No, it was't planned as it can be seen as reporting as 104L at Ladbroke Grove. So it was some sort of out of course incident.

However the sleepers do tend to have a lot of padding in their timetables, both as recovery time and as long layovers. Generally this is because they normally have to negotiate odd routes and go slowly round or through engineering work. In your case there is 21 minutes of timetable padding at Uffington, another 5 at Westbury. You also have very long layovers, an hour at Exeter, just over 50m at Plymouth and almost 20m at Liskeard. So by the time you are deep into Cornwall you were back to on time. :)

Would you mind awfully if we co-ranked it with the Deerstalker? The scenery couldn't be described as any less dramatic and I do rather like the sofas in the lounge car.

sleepers also have padding in their timetables to facilitate arrivals at sensible times.

Sorry; the best train is just that train you need to use for work/leisure where 1 has a seat and arrive on time. My view is that the 5.40 from to Edinburgh to London KX is the best with traveltime of 4 hours. Other trains are 20 to 45 minutes extra.

I think I saw on a Yahoo Group (message a little brief and vague) that 57603 failed and 57303 sent to assist.

Which doesn't matter because people will just regurgitate the same old cr-p despite it being posted 20 times why it can't happen!

A feature, I suggest, of forums such as this which contain thousands of threads which it would not be feasible to sift through before posting a comment which may have been made before somewhere.

I know the sleeper dawdles a fair bit, but 40 minutes from Paddington to Royal Oak??! :o :)

It would be nice if said forums had a feature that made it possible to sift... no, that's not quite the right word... seek.... no, that's not it... hmm.. I'm sure there's a word for it.... scour.... no, that's not it either.

Looks like it was scheduled to run via Swindon and Chippenham (which it often does as one of its many different routes it takes between Reading and Exeter) but instead went straight from Reading to Taunton via the Berks & Hants, presumably to make up lost time, all of which it made up by the time it left Exeter.
