What is the connection time between trains at Waterloo

I thought the official connection time between trains at Waterloo was 10 minutes but when looking up Twickenham to Guildford Journeys today, it wasn't showing connections that were about 10 minutes part. So what is the official time?

For example if I got a the 17.23 fast service, arriving into Waterloo at 17.49, it shows the 18.15 and not the 18.00. Equally getting the 17.28 stopping service, arriving at 18.02, it suggests the 18.18 and not the 18.15. The 17.41 journey suggested I'd be in Guildford a 19.06. The 18.11 journey also suggests getting home at 19.06, although you do have to change twice but at least you avoid Waterloo and peak rush hour!

I'd have thought 10 minutes would be enough time to make a connecting train. More so than the 5 minutes allowed at Woking, which during the evening peak can drop to minus minutes if you get held up behind a late running stopping service. Are people often 6-7 minutes late into Waterloo? I use those times because I think 3-4 minutes may be pushing it to make a connecting Tarun at Waterloo, especially if you don't know the platform number.

Depsite the longer waiting time than I'd have expected and the time it takes to get from Clapham Junction to Waterloo and back through it, National Rail Enquiries still recommended going via Waterloo than getting out at Clapham Junction and taking a stopping service all the way to Guildford.

I wouldn't have thought there would be that much in it though, unless the trains don't connect well at Clapham Junction.

15 mins is also the time shown for Waterloo in the notes section (station information table) at the back of any SWT paper timetable booklet.

Remember that 15 minutes has to account for the longest interchange at the station, including the Underground. 15 minutes from the rear of a train on Platform 19 (20 would have been even worse when open) to the Jubilee Line with luggage doesn't seem so unreasonable.

Thanks for all replies. At Gatwick Airport, they allow 10 minutes between connections for Southern branded services and First Greta Western services but only 5 minutes for Southern to Southern services.

Going from platform 7 to 1 is going to take the same amount of time be you getting a Southern train or First Great Western one.

Surely they could have less connection time for some services at Waterloo and not others. I mean Clapham Junction is 10 minutes and that's 17 platforms. Perhaps Waterloo East could be 15 minutes. So it might be more confusing. No worse than at Gatwick Airport. East Croydon is just 5 minutes and during peak rush hour trains are often delayed meaning you may not even make your connection.

Im not trying to moan here. I'm stating my case for having shorter interchange times.

As an aside, the 18.15 got into Guildford 5 minutes early as did the 17.45. We were Owyhee via Woking. Usually I think it goes via Cobham line. Despite that we don't appear to have delayed any trains behind us.

Nice to be on a train arriving early for once. For various reasons some of the trains I usually get nearly always arrive late.

I guess Southern have more power to hold another Southern service if a regular connection is to be made by a lot of passengers where as one from another TOC isn't as simple to do.

Perhaps train delay attribution figures and costs should be published. I don't know if they are.

If you ever have enough of driving trains, perhaps you could work for the department that deals with that.

I've been approached to do an office job before and it would drive me bonkers (even more bonkers than I am already!), the only thing that interests me away from driving is control, which I'd like to find out more about, in case I fail my medical or something happens that means I can no longer drive.
