It is being reported that Bombardier is cutting 270 "management and contractor" jobs at Derby.
This is part of global cutbacks following the sale of a 30% stake in the company to CDPQ in Canada, to fund the C-series jet programme.
The impact on aerospace in Belfast is much greater (up to 1000 jobs).

Bombardier will also cut 270 management and contractor jobs at its trains business in the UK. The UK rail business employs 3,500 people
Not a happy company.

We had a breif from management at the end of our shift; its only white collar jobs that are being cut at Derby C&W.

Its a management reshuffle essentially, they can't risk cutting production staff with contracts as big as Crossrail just starting.

Only 44 full time jobs will be lost as it says in the article.

Im sure the workers in Dublin and Derby are pretty satisfied by Bombardier saying they are offsetting the job losses by hiring more to make planes.....in Quebec.

Fair amount of jobs going in Northern Ireland. a seventh of the total cuts. Quite sad, as there is a long history of aviation at that site.

When Bombardier took over Derby were there any other bidders for the works?
Especially UK bidders. I was shocked a few years ago to see one of the few works left in the UK being operated by a foreign company.

I am sure that saved 1000's of jobs then, so you can't really have a dig at them now. Especially since the government gave away contracts abroad left right and centre.

I've a feeling that AdTranz or something like that owned the site before Bombardier took over. BREL shed thousands of jobs in the 1980's so the damage was really done then. BREL had a few export orders in the 1970's / 1980's but not many.

It's worth remembering here that in the 1980's Doncaster, Crewe, York and Shildon were still building vehicles for our network. Not to mention Brush at Loughborough. Swindon was still open for major repairs as was the Loco Works in Derby and of course Eastleigh. I think York BREL finished up as Thrall but I can't be certain and of course Eastleigh has managed to survive.

Perhaps they should be satisfied, if there's an increase in work in Canada then that may well be the difference between jobs being saved and many more redundancies occurring elsewhere in the company, that's the way global companies operate

No, because its being partly nationalised to stop it going bankrupt they are prioritising Canadian jobs.
Canadian state owned pension company taking a 30% stake in its rail operations and Quebec Government taking a 49% share in its aircraft programs.

2830 jobs to go in Canada, 2430 in aviation, 400 in rail, so unfair to suggest that it's foreign workers only who've been sacrificed.

Bombardier are in terrible financial trouble due to plummeting sales of their existing aircraft, and poor sales of the new C series airliner.

Plus the Metro-Cammell/Alstom plant at Washwood Heath.

BREL was sold to its management and ABB. ABB then sold their rail business to AdTranz, who were then taken over by Bombardier. The Voyagers were a Bombardier product, hence nothing to do with Derby.

Been suggested that while there will be some job losses at Derby possibly partially as a response to the completion of the Tfl contract (S Stock), they will be re hiring again latter in the year for Crossrail.

At Derby I believe it went

BREL
ABB
AdTranz (Damiler with another partner)
Bombardier

Doncaster was a management buyout called RFS Industries that refurbished mostly wagons and some passenger vehicles I think. Folded some time ago.

Alstom went after the Pendolino order was completed. Now looking at Widnes to restart assembly.

ADtranz was a joint venture between ABB and Daimler (ABB Daimler-Benz Transportation).
Daimler later bought out the ABB part and it became briefly DaimlerChrysler Rail Systems.
Then Daimler sold the rail business to Bombardier (who already had the Class 22x fleet and depots).

Errrrrr, no.

There were two works at Doncaster. The loco works ended up in BRML and eventually Bombardier. It is now closed.

The wagon works was sold to RFS which, after financial problems, became a "mark 2" RFS. This was later sold and is now part of Wabtec. It is very much open!

OT Amazing what you can do when you are not tied down by EU regulations!OT

Sorry, wrong thread.

Yes let's keep it on track/topic. All I wanted to say is the Bombardier mess is in part because the Q series plane programme is not going well. In terms of state aid it is not that simple - yes we have EU laws on it but it does not mean you cannot provide state aid, it needs to be to help the private company back on its feet as part of an approved plan over a defined period. There are plenty of examples of that. Bombardier is also having to rationalise to receive the money via the various Canadian state entities.

Alstom ultimately went due to the disastrous Juniper and Adelante trains

Having got the first SWT order, if the 458 had been half decent, I'm sure they would have stuck with them instead of going to Siemens, and been in with a chance of the Thameslink and Crossrail orders.

It is so sad at what has happened to manufacturing in GB All the tings we used to do but don't now
I was watching a vid on you tube late 50s about building diesels They were loading a boat at Liverpool with engines to go to Spain
Now we but them from Spain------Where did it all go so wrong

Broadly, we failed to modernise after the war (both of them) and other countries overtook us.
That and the commonwealth building their own stuff or buying elsewhere.
We also ignored the European market for a long time, because of all those pesky foreign languages.

But we still turn out cars, planes and many other things for export, just not necessarily under a British brand.
We also make more out of financing other people's deals in the City than out of the manufacturing.
The recent Bombardier deal was engineered in the UK.
My 5p.
