Just a query:

Would a Cambridge/destinations south of Cambridge - Bury St Edmunds return ticket be valid direct via Newmarket one way and with a change at Ely the other way? Or am I missing something obvious here?

Many thanks (in advance),

Yes in the case of a Cambridge-Bury St Edmunds ticket, according to NRE and VTEC.

Yes, there's no need to use the same route on both legs of a return. In fact, it's common for connexions to work out such that the fastest routes are different depending on direction.

How do you reach that conclusion? If I search for a Cambridge to Bury St Edmunds ticket, NRE offers me a £10.80 off-peak day return for using direct trains via Newmarket, but says I need multiple tickets if I also add in "via Ely" to the search.

I think this governed by local journey rules (as Bury St Edmunds uses Cambridge as its routeing point for this journey) of the Routeing Guide and I would check this out as I doubt the return via Ely is the shortest route.

Cambridge is a routeing point for Bury St Edmunds so it is only valid routes no more than 3 miles longer than the shortest route. Going via Ely is a lot more than 3 miles longer so would not be valid.

However for longer distance journeys such as Bury St Edmunds - London, both Ely and Cambridge pass the fares check so you can go either way.

In my defence I will simply say that putting Cambrige to BSE into the VTEC journey planner without a via point produces itineraries for the offpeak day return some of which are direct (i.e. via Newmarket) and some of which are via Ely.

On the other hand, I must have mis-read the NRE result, for which my apologies.

There would seem to be a discussion to be had as to whether the VTEC journey planner should have offered the itineraries it offered.
