Yes it's the "Elizabeth Line"

Crossrail, the new railway which will run beneath London, is to be named the Elizabeth Line in honour of the Queen, Boris Johnson has announced.
London's mayor revealed the line's name and purple logo as he visited Bond Street station with the monarch.
Trains on the railway will travel under the centre of the city, linking parts of Berkshire and Buckinghamshire to Essex when it opens in December 2018.
Mr Johnson said it was "wonderful" the line had "such a significant name".
"The Elizabeth Line will provide a lasting tribute to our longest-serving monarch", the mayor said.

I must admit "Crossrail" sounds a lot better

It's all a bit ridiculous really. They're going to have to redo loads of signage when there was nothing wrong with the original name in the first place.

How crass, it's just Crossrail as far as I'm concerned, it does what it says!

I know there's the Victoria Line but 'Elizabeth Line' doesn't exactly trip off the tongue. It won't be long before it is known as the 'Lizzy Line' or perhaps the 'Busy Lizzy Line'.

What signage?

Presumably Crossrail will remain the name of the project, which is what all existing signage refers to. Once the line opens it'll be the Elizabeth Line.

In the same way as there is no reference to HS1 anywhere on that line.

Crossrail already had a name, I don't see why this was necessary.

I'm not particularly keen on the name. I mean no disrespect whatsoever to HMQE2, but this makes the line sound like another tube line (Victoria Line springs to mind as the obvious parallel), whereas in reality it's not going to be part of London Underground. Seems unnecessarily confusing. Sticking with "Crossrail" seems to be a much better idea in my opinion.

I'm sure we'll soon get used to "...taking the Liz to Shenfield".

Perhaps they could rename Thameslink the "Pistachio Line" -

Then we could all "...take the Pis to Bedford" - GTR seem to be doing that already.

Apart from the HS1 signs at Stratford International.

We've all known it as Crossrail throughout construction therefore what is the point in renaming it - seems to be a needless PR exercise. After all, what will Crossrail 2 be called now; The Charles Line?

Perhaps they need to think about splitting the London Overground into separate lines as well.

The Gospel Oak to Barking line could be renamed the GOBLIN line for starters.

Suggestions for the other routes anyone?

Why has it been renamed? I am strongly opposed. Old name was fine, new one is ridiculous. I strongly question the motives for changing it. No consultation or vote?

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
I would simply have it called London Crossrail, as that is what the project has been referred to thoughout since its inception. After all, when the Snow Hill Tunnel (London, not the one in Birmingham) reopened to provide through running on a north - south axis, that was referred to as Thameslink 2000 [sic]. Nobody had the crazy suggestion of naming it afterwards "The London, Brighton, & South Coast Railway, City Widened Lines, and Midland Railway Joint Committee". It was still simply "Thameslink".

It does seem ridiculous naming London Crossrail after something that a proportion of the population does not recognise, with the person it is named after being not far away from when it is their turn to depart this world.

Completely agree, I'm not anti-monarchy but making it sound like another tube line when in fact it will technically be a National Rail "mainline" service seems a bit silly.

Questioning from a journalist forced Boris to admit that it's thanks to the EU that the line got funded. :D

I personally am thrilled with the name. Her Majesty looked fabulous in her outfit almost matching the lines colour.

That name was mentioned last year on LBC as a possible name as Crossrail was always only going to be it's construction name.
Similar to most Windows systems which have a development name until they go on sale when it changes.

I like the name.

By then it will be called the Hopkins line, in celebration of Katie becoming Queen. Or some other reality TV celebrity.

Will it matter when everything will come under the newly nationalised Corbyn Rail umbrella?

Tramlink could become the South District line

Deliberately confusing, if you ask me.

TfL/the mayor seem keen to put the idea into people's heads that when they take over a line and brand it London Overground then it ceases to become a National Rail line and the obligations incumbent on a National Rail TOC do not apply to them. If you start giving lines 'Underground type' names, even more people will believe the lie.

Errrrr!----- perhaps they could make it slightly simpler and give them all numbers!

Time we ended the fallacy that everyone wants to fawn over Royalty. Not every UK citizen is as staunchly Royalist as Mike Brown assumes.
Royalty has contributed nothing to the building of Crossrail so why should the line have to be named after them?
Let's hope the new Mayor will have the sense to revert to the more sensible CROSSRAIL 1 name.

I honestly don't think that the name will appear on signage. I went to Tottenham Court Road two weeks ago, when at that point they were probably making the decision on what they should call it, and you could clearly make out that the signage said 'Crossrail'. Why would they spend all that money rebranding it if they already have all the signage in place?

Because politicians got involved. And then they'll have kept the news to a small group
