My good lady holds a Z2-4 Annual (with Gold Card). A change in circumstances means she is now going to commute Selhurst / Belsize park. The various travel options avoiding zone 1 are pretty time consuming and even her passion for reading would be tested to destruction.

So . . . her most likely travel options are a mix of Southern Selhurst - Victoria - Tube (via zone 1 obviously) and Selhurst - Balham - Tube. The suspicion is that Northbound it will likely be Balham / tube and via Victoria on the way home as it's a more sociable place to wait for trains going home when it's all a bit turnipy.

Anyway. She has about three months left on the Annual. Choices. . .

Refund and get a new Annual Zones 1 - 4
Just use PAYG for each days extensions
Buy a Zone 1 add on for three months

The cost for a quarterly that will only be used twice 5 days a week doesn't seem to stack up against the few PAYG journeys she has done thus far cost wise.

Thoughts anyone?

You can't simply buy a zone 1 travelcard. TfL have a habit of 'simplifying' options, but what you'd actually get is a zone 1-2 travelcard. That is why the cost doesn't compare well with the £2.40 single you'll be charged on PAYG. The TfL system doesn't think the avoiding zone 1 options are sensible either so it doesn't offer any as an option on a Selhurst to Belsize Park journey. Thus to make such a journey you'd have to exit and re-enter somewhere en-route to make it two journeys, and probably add even more time in the process.

You can apply to extend the travelcard by paying the pro-rata difference between the two products plus a small admin fee. If it is 3 months then you're looking at a little under £200. I'm not sure how it works in the new world with no LU ticket offices, but staff at an Underground station should be able to help.

Depending on where exactly she works Selhurst - Hampstead Heath (via Clapham Junction) might be an option and isn't that much slower than Selhurst - Belsize Park.

Thanks for replies so far:
She purchased the ticket at Canary Wharf ! (her current journey is Norwood Junction to new Cross Gate)

She is not too far from Hamstead Heath but she is not too sold on the idea . . I have suggested a dry run or two as she has to go there a couple of times in the coming weeks before she starts the full on commute.

If the following journey is made Selhurst Dep 07.13 - Shepherds Bush Arr 07.50, change Shepherd Bush Dep 07.56 - Hampstead heath Arr - 08.18 I assume Oyster works out that the route avoided zone 1 if she only touches in at Selhurst and out again at Hampstead Heath?

Correct, that is the default route for those two stations. She'd have to actually change in zone 1 or at West Hampstead Thameslink to trigger a zone 1 fare.

Since the Travelcard was purchased from London Underground, you should follow these instructions:

TfL said:
Changing zones on your Travelcard
Call Customer Services if you want to reduce or add zones on to your existing Travelcard.

Phone: 0343 222 1234
08:00-20:00, Monday to Sunday including public holidays (TfL call charges)

I believe that a changeover of zones for a London Underground-issued travelcard can only be used by the customer services backoffice and not by station staff

Yes, SHS is in zone 1. You can avoid it by changing at Canada Water (or Whitechapel) and Stratford. You must touch the pink validator on the Overground platforms at Stratford.

Shotts (SHS) is several hundred miles from zone 1 ;)

She has tried various and confirmed her best option was the one she tried out yesterday morning (Sunday) that involved a move from Selhurst to Streatham, Clapham High Street, Pimlico, Victoria, Hyde Park Corner, Baker Street, St Johns Wood, Swiss Cottage and Hampstead.

All done in 50 minutes for free

In my car.

That was a one off !

Anyway thanks for the replies all. .
