G'day everyone,

I'm staying at my Mum's tonight who has an excellent view of the MML between Chesterfield and Ambergate. At around 20.40 a Class 31 passed by heading towards Derby. The loco didn't appear to be hauling a train but I only just saw it at the last minute.

Any ideas as to who own's it and and its final destination would be much appreciated!

Kind regards,

Richmond Commuter!

Green or Yellow? There was 0Z31 which was a Derby - Derby engine move via all sorts of bits West & South Yorkshire. I assume it was an NR move of some sort

I saw what looked like a 31 at around 5.40pm yesterday idling next to Holbeck engine shed in Leeds before speeding off in the Sheffield direction. Assume it was the same engine.

Many thanks for all your replies! In all honesty I didn't realise that Network Rail still operated a Class 31. Who else operates them on the main line?

Many thanks for that :) Who owns it?

Devon & Cornwall Railways (DCR) I believe.

There are 3 which are officially operational.
31233 in Network Rail yellow.
31452 in Devon and Cornwall Rail Green.
31601 in Devon and Cornwall Rail Grey. (Not worked since 17/12/2015, located at Washwood Heath but not showing as stored)

The DCR pair are used on stock transfers and driver training mostly with 31233 operating test trains. The rest of the Network Rail lot are stored.

Right that makes a lot of sense as the class 31 was in a dark colour but as I say I only caught sight of it at the last minute. Are we therefore assuming that NR are subcontracting work to DCR? Where are all the DCR locos normally based?

The 31 you saw was 31452 on a light engine, driver training run. I personally don't recall DCR locos being used on test trains, the stock transfers refereed to above are mainly for Chiltern taking MK3 stock to/from refurbishment. DCR also have/had contracts for moving Railvac's to and from possessions. The locos are based from Washwood Heath.
