Hi. I'm struggling to find an answer to this question, so hopefully someone will have it.

If I were to travel Newcastle to Glasgow Queen Street on advance singles each way, changing at Edinburgh Waverley, am I also restricted to fixed trains on the Edinburgh-Glasgow portion of the journey?

The reason I ask is that I'm looking to plan a trip later in the month, and I hope to travel back and give myself a couple hours in Edinburgh, rather than having to rush between connections.

Thanks in advance.

This is likely to be a Virgin Trains East Coast[1] & Connections ticket, which will probably state on the ticket that it is valid on "appropriate" or "suitable" connecting services.

A couple of hours? Providing you don't leave the station[2] to break your journey, that should be OK, though there is no definition of what is appropriate/suitable, so it is open to interpretation.

Notes:
[1] I'm assuming you're taking the superior, and usually cheaper option and not taking XC!;)
[2] Before anyone asks, no an infringement isn't detectable, but that's the rule! :p

Just to add to what Yorkie has said, if you start off in the National Rail Enquiries journey planner, and use the Advanced Options to opt for increased interchange time, and then click through to VTEC to purchase, you will probably find that you are buying with the precisely the itinerary you want, if that gives you extra comfort. But as Yorkie says, you should be fine without doing that so long as you don't try to use a Cross Country or VTEC train between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
