I took the Upminster to Romford line the other day, which is a 10 minute "push and pull" journey with just 1 intermediate stop.

It made me wonder whether the driver does that route every day? It must get pretty boring. Or will each driver do that route on a rota, so perhaps only one or two days per week, and work on other Overground routes on other days?

At the moment the work is covered by AGA Ilford drivers, but soon it will be TFL drivers taking over. From the Ilford drivers I know that cannot come soon enough. I'm sure there will be some willing new drivers happy to do a dozen trips over there :D

Errrrr, what's that ?
I know that the Greenford branch line is commonly referred to by West London locals as the "Push and pull" from the days of steam where the locomotive would always be based at one end of the train, pulling the train into Greenford and pushing it back out (with an Autocoach).

Generally the diagrams are mixed with other work where possible, so half a shift is spent on the branch and the other half elsewhere. Now Ilford has been split between AGA and MTR they are two smaller depots so drivers find themselves on the branch more frequently. Yes, it's not the most enthralling work.

Once upon a time there was a well known Stratford driver who would actually swap for Upminster work, but we're talking DMUs here, a long while ago. In those days it was commonly referred to as the push-pull, a phrase I haven't heard for a while.

Is the Waterloo & City still operated by Central Line Operators?

From my understanding Stourbridge Parry People Mover drivers are only able to drive the PPM and on the branch?

W&C certainly used to be operated by Leytonstone based drivers.

The PPM is operated by its own staff who only sign it and the branch.

When I was based at Waterloo the BR crews used to run it. Mind you that was some time ago!!

Yep. When it was worked by heavy rail (as recently as 2009) then it was operated by normal train crew. I'm sure a ton of depots signed it over the years but it was Worcester men towards the end. They'd tend to do a couple of hours on it before going off to somewhere further afield.

When I was based at Waterloo (clerical side) Waterloo "mainline" drivers had it as part of their link but the guards were down there exclusively. This imformation directly from the mouths of a driver and guard I chatted to one day.

There was a few drivers I knew at Ilford who would happily do Romfords all day every day; full train drivers money with only a short branch line with 1 signal....

Not when I was doing the diagramming!

New Street men - three hours back and forth, PNB, three hours back and forth.

Sorry lads!

Cardiff Bay branch is worked like that - from what I've seen most of the diagrams there have you on the branch for no more than an hour or two as part of longer, slightly more exciting jobs.

Yes it's still Leytonstone drivers and when I worked on the line they were all very, very popular duties in the mafia normally only going to the senior men.
