Hello,

New here, Hi to all :)

I commute semi regularly from Potters Bar to KGX during peak times in the morning and then returning home on a train between 1700 to 1800 which I now understand is also peak time for Carnet tickets.

As I cycle to work a few times a week I am after the most convenient ticketing approach that doesn't involve me queuing up every time I want a ticket.

So far I have been using the Carnet option which had been working well for me. However although I bought peak tickets for the morning and off peak tickets for the evening as advised by the ticket sellers, I have since noticed online that the the evening journey I make is actually classed as a peak journey. This makes the carnet tickets quite pricey if buying 2x peak.

I was wondering if any one had any ideas on what I can buy, I commute 2 days a week but sometimes I might commute 4 times so the Carnets were working well.

Thanks,
Matt

I don't think there are any evening peak restrictions between Kings Cross and Potters Bar so Off Peak tickets are valid.

I don't think there are any evening peak restrictions between Kings Cross and Potters Bar so Off Peak tickets are valid.

Unfortunately there are on off peak carnet tickets, as these carry restriction code 'CP', which among other things states:

Not valid on trains timed to
depart London Kings Cross,
London St Pancras Intl,
Moorgate between 16:29 and
before 19:02, regardless of
where you join or leave the
service.

I'd say that, compared at least to the other tickets on the route, the peak carnets offer good value as even a super off peak single non-carnet is 10p a journey more expensive, and still offer a discount versus the £13.90 anytime day return.

D'oh! I was looking at it in the wrong direction! In that case the solution is simple. Peak carnets Potters Bar-London Terminals there, offpeak London-Potters Bar back. The OP can indeed save money.

Ah cheers guys, so I can use my off peak carnet (£4.20) to home in the evenings.

This is my best option then, I shall continue!

I had read the Quote

Not valid on trains timed to
depart London Kings Cross,
London St Pancras Intl,
Moorgate between 16:29 and
before 19:02, regardless of
where you join or leave the
service.

Where did you see the words you have quoted?

Those words appear in the brfares.com version of restriction CP, which is the restriction for a Potters Bar to London Terminals offpeak carnet single, both as applying to the outward, and to the return, journey. (Edit: the words also appear in the NRE version of the restriction).

I am not sure that I understand why Potters Bar to London carnet single, if valid for travel in either direction, has a restriction that is different to the restriction for a London to Potters Bar carnet single, which also appears to be valid for travel in either direction.

That's helpful, thank you. I now understand that whatever may be said in the restrictions about return travel, in fact each book of Thameslink carnets is for travel in one direction only, and that for coming back one has to buy a separate book of carnets specifying travel in the return direction. In other words, the bits in the two restrictions about return travel have no relevance to the current Thameslink carnets.

Could someone summarise the restrictions in one post please? ie what restrictions apply to Carnet tickets from PB to KGX, and also for down journeys.

Off-Peak Carnet tickets from Potters Bar to London Terminals are "Not valid for travel on trains timed to depart after 04:29 and before 09:40". In the ooposite direction, the restriction is "Not valid on trains timed to depart after 0429 and before 0930". There are no afternoon restrictions in either direction. References to return travel in the restriction text should be ignored because Carnet tickets are singles.
