Hi all,

I am currently a telecoms apprentice engineer (I'm 20) and like a lot of people, I would like to become a driver.

I am currently looking for Trainee Driver jobs in the Midlands area and would like to ask if a PTS (Which I have held for 2 years) or a completed apprenticeship will help me in my venture.

Thanks,
Ross

In short, no. The process is equal for everyone.

In the long, potentially yes.

Having an apprenticeship ticks the right boxes when it comes to the interview stages and it would also show you have a good work ethic.

You are also more likely to have a greater insight and understanding of rail operations if you passed the assessments and got to training.

Any qualification helps to a certain degree, PTS will give you the edge over someone who hasn't got PTS but as Comutor has said it won't instantly get you a job as you are trained in PTS anyway and it's only a 2 day course out of 9 months training.

You'll have to redo the PTS anyway I would have thought

On my driver training course there was a guy who had previously worked as a network rail track engineer and had spent years working on the tracks. He still had to redo the entire PTS course from scratch.

To the OP, PTS probably won't be any help of itself but, if you've worked on/around the railway, you should have some good examples to draw from to answer competency-based interview questions.

Best of luck.
