In the summer a friend and I would like to do a day-trip from Milton Keynes to North Wales via the Welsh Highland Railway (WHR). We have done a Ffestiniog Round Robin before to keep the costs down. Is there an equivalent ticket available for the WHR?

No, but thé North Wales Rover all zones day ticket gives you half the "full" WHR (and FR) fare, so might be worth costing out.

That's definitely worth considering, thank you. Though I'm note sure on the "mid-Wales" portion to Shrewsbury

Dovey Junction-Shrewsbury-Chirk was included in the All Zones Rover according to the 2015 leaflet for the North Wales Rover.

There are cheap £24 offpeak returns between Milton Keynes and Shrewsbury valid only on London Midland and Arriva Trains Wales which might just enable doing the round trip in a day: the time restrictions on the £18 super offpeak return would prevent doing everything in a day.
