Who does all the old MK1 parcel vans at Hellifield belong to? they look as if they have been there for quite a long time now.

Just hazarding a guess here, but didn't WCRC purchase a good number of these (presuming they are of BG/GUV type or similar) some time ago for recovery of spares to keep their mk1 fleet serviceable?

Around ten years a go a rake of four wheel base Cargo Waggons were parked up at Hellifield on the same siding where I think a loco shed was planned but for whatever reason it fell through.

Apologies for going off topic here but whatever happened to the plan to install a turntable at Hellifield?

I did wonder that myself when I saw them again on way back home after passing Carnforth as it was a bit full up there yard at present.

Was there not a loco shed there years ago that had items stored in side it for years. May be National Railways Museum stuff ( even pre NRM days)

It might be due to the lack of second hand turntables been avaiable and who is going to pay for it to be installed.

Yes that's right :) The Midland Railway loco shed was indeed used to store loco's / rolling stock saved for the nation after it closed in the mid 1960's. However the MR loco shed was located on the opposite side to where the rolling stock is currently stored.

Yes I thought that the ex loco shed was on the other side of the track where the items was stored.
The shed thats still there and vans look like they are a private sidings area maybe.

The siding belongs to West Coast Railway Company, at least that's what the big sign says on the fence. The parcel vans (which have been there for at least two years now) also belong to them I believe.

No idea. But you get a good view of the old turntable (what's left of it) by taking a walk along the newly designated footpath adjacent to the station

There was a few years ago a plan to build a new shed there for WCR I think. IIRC some structure got built, but I cannot recall if it remains there as like any real enthusiast I am always too busy with my GPS to look out of the window.

Yes WCR bought a lot of Mk1 vans for spares, including some of the PCVs with a cab of sorts at one end. Carnforth is full of them.

Attached is an image of the only shed in the Hellifield area. If I recall correctly it's been there as long as I have (almost 10 years).

That was built round about the time the enthusiast press said a steam facility was planned at Hellifield. I've not looked for it recently, so wasn't sure if it was still there, honestly. I'm not sure if there is any track to it. Steamtown closed to visitors in the late 1990's and that may have meant that all work could be done in Carnforth. The dates are roughly right. Again IIRC the basic structure went up quickly but it never looked finished, lacking doors etc.

I believe there were issues with the shed's construction, the foundations IIRC, so work on the shed was stopped and never resumed

the shed was going to be for WCRC steam services on the Settle-Carlisle, but got abandoned.
The parcels vans are WCRC's scrap line for spares
