Lost somewhere within Bank-Monument tube station,
Is this the best ever name for a ship? RRS Boaty McBoatface is leading the vote as public name new polar vessel

The suggestion for The National Research Council’s (NERC) next Royal Research Ship (RRS), is currently beating RRS Henry Worseley and RRS David Attenborough.

The new ship will replace the existing RRS James Clark Ross and RRS Ernest Shackleton, which work in the Arctic and Antarctic.

The boat will be 128 metres long and weigh around 15,000 tonnes, and up to 90 scientists and support staff could live on board.

The £200m vessel is due to be operational in 2019.

Anyone can propose a suitable name on the website and other ideas in the running are RRS Usain Boat, RRS Ice Ice Baby and RRS Boatimus Prime.

Fingers crossed we’ll see RRS Boaty McBoatface sailing through the Arctic Circle though.

I love being British sometimes.:D

As much as it appeals to my sometimes childish sense of humor, I highly doubt that they would go for a name like that. Hopefully, they go for the name that has both the most votes and sounds reasonably sensible (a personal vote for RRS David Attenborough here).

Sounds great if you're about five.

Not really. My kids didn't find it funny. Their sense of humour is a lot different to an adults. If anything a kids name for a boat would be more on the lines of RSS CBBC. Naming it after a person is very trite.

I will admit its a very British thing to do and a typical response from a internet generation. Every time the ship enters port it would cause some amusement and put smiles on people faces. I don't see anything wrong with that.

I'd go with something like RSS Ice Hunter

Surely we can come up with something better from TV, films, music or literature such as:

Vital Spark (BBC series)
Black Pig (Captain Pugwash)
The Saucy Mrs Flobster (Beachcomber)
The Good Ship Venus (song)

Any more suggestions?

Any more suggestions?

Queen Anne's Revenge (For the Yarrrr)
Lollipop (She was so sweet)
Aurora (dearstalkingtastic)
Nautilus (a little deep)
Pequod (MGS)
Caspartine (De Niro in a dress)
Enterprise (HMS Ark Royals favourite ship)

Or to reflect its main purpose - RRS Arctic Role - with Captain Birds Eye at the helm.

I just hope that a vessel that is to be performing such duties is not to be seen to be carrying such a puerile name of the type in the OP. Does anyone want to see Britain made the laughing stock of the world....<(

goodness sake - it isn't going to be called Boaty McBoatface regardless of any internet poll. It is not the general election! What will happen is what always happens when these sort of polls are run and return a silly verdict: The silly name will be disqualified and replaced by a more appropriate name. But you must all know that............

Don't even know why they're asking people to name a silly boat when they can just convert a 442.
