Anyone know what damage has occurred at/near Crewe that's causing problems this afternoon ?

Crewe had yesterday already all kinds of problems for Virgin. One can travel via Manchester. Ticket acceptance is in place. It more about signalling problems.

It was so bad that they made a mistake with a tweet:
My bad! Not that it makes it that much better, but it was the 19:12 Crewe to London Euston service, not the 15:40! *hangs head in shame* ^PH

Points run through apparently. Affects Crewe to Manchester (and return) services.

Points run through, meaning no access into platform 1, which should only affect Northern. I believe it won't be fixed until Tuesday/Wednesday morning, so Northern are planning an amended timetable for the next couple of days

Is it apparent whether it was a wrong side failure, operating incident, or SPAD?

If its Platform one that is affected, it can only be the points for the EMU stabling siding, the connection from the Up Manchester or the connection from the Up slow. Intrigued as to what has happened.

Northern are turning back at Alderley Edge/Sandbach.
So as VT are off anyway, ATW are the only ones left today.
However they generally seem to be unaffected, using P6 at Crewe.
NRE says it won't be fixed until Wednesday, so it should get interesting with a full service on Tuesday and P1 not available.

Pardon my ignorance, but could you explain exactly what you have in mind by "points run through"?

A train passes through the points in the trailing direction (the direction in which the tracks converge) when they are set for a train to use the other track. There usually isn't a risk of derailment but the train will push the switches over and break something in the mechanism.

It's likely to be down to human error by somebody but I'm not going to speculate about who.

Crossover between Up Wilmslow and Down Wilmslow lines is where the run through has occurred (during a posession). This means the points are un-useable in the reverse position, so no train can depart from P1 or P5 heading towards Manchester.

Local trains south from sandbach have been cancelled and bus replacement is running. Fast trains from wilmslow to London and Wales via Crewe are running.

Instead of running a bus why can't the Arriva service stop at Sandbach to connect with the stopping Northern service, or is that too complicated for todays disjointed railway where doing things for the convenince of passengers seems to an absolute no-go.

I'm not even sure if they can ask for such a service??
Of course they can - there is nothing stopping one TOC asking another TOC to help them out. The question that needs asking is what would the impact be of an additional stop to the rest of ATW's services and other connections?

Well you could still transfer at Wilmslow. Sandbach is the last stop before Crewe?

Our WML-London train came in to crewe on platform 5 as normal.

Clearly Northern felt it was easier and less disruptive to ATW to go with the bus option! Or maybe the did ask ATW and ATW thought that the impact of an additional stop was too much?

Network Rail would have been involved in any decisions.

Not sure what would have been gained from stopping ATW trains at Sandbach. Would only have been of benefit for passengers to Sandbach, Holmes Chapel, Goostrey, Chelford and Alderley Edge from Crewe - who, in my experience, are not numerous!

The downside - of adding 2 or 3 minutes to the ATW trains - might have been more significant given the issues of threading them through Cheadle Hulme!

Would have been of benefit for passengers from those stations heading south too, and there's a fair few that take the morning stopper from wilmslow to crewe.
