Just wondering, will there be any additional services and/or strengthening for Saturdays event at Aintree?

Typically EMT run Meridians rather than 158s on Liverpool-Nottingham.

I wondered about that because I imagine a 4car Meridian wouldn't offer any more capacity (perhaps less) than doubled up 158s.

Would a 5car set offer any advantage, assuming any were available?

You're quite right, a 4 car EMT class 158 offers 284 seats. There's 181 seats (both 1st and standard) in a 222/1 and 5 car 222 has a total of 242!

It's generally a 7 car 222 fully declassified and this year it's on the 0847 and 1547 services from Nottingham to Liverpool, and the 1152 and 1852 returns.

The same trains as per other years. Reports code's for above are 1T62, 1T10, 1T90 and 1L17.

Don't forget the Annual DBS operated "VSOE" pilgrimage to Liverpool too:-
1Z39 08.14hrs London Victoria - Runcorn VSOE. (arr 12.07)
5Z39 12.16hrs Runcorn - Crewe CS VSOE ECS. (arr 13.21)
5Z40 18.15hrs Crewe CS - Liverpool Lime St VSOE ECS. (arr 19.04)
1Z40 19.25hrs Liverpool Lime St - London Victoria VSOE (arr 00.18)

Why does it only go to Runcorn? Not much use if you are trying to get to Aintree.

I think there will be a fleet of coaches waiting at Runcorn.

Presumably on the return there will be concerns that the returning coaches might be delayed and better to have the train standing at Lime Street rather than at Runcorn!

I suppose avoiding throwing more people into the middle of Liverpool where they can get drunk and be merry before the race is a good thing. Also I guess they have booked through tickets to get to the race course and would be very upset if they couldn't then get out to the course.

Fair enough, assuming your right probably the most sensible thing to do. Looks like the following Birmingham train will get a bit screwed up by it though.

I think

Also means not having to hire the Coaches and it is your own fault if you miss the train.

I think it'll be coaches back to Lime Street - if you've paid VSOE prices you won't want to join the (enormous) queue at Aintree station and risk missing the train.

18:52 seems tight given the race of the day itself starts at 17:15.

Also I am sure this race is getting later and later every year.

I note a disused siding on Google Earth at Aintree, does anyone know its use and could it be used, stabling a special service etc

If you could find away of getting to it, be my guest.

The simple answer in no, not unless someone is offering to spend a lot of money on the railways in Merseyside.

It has been put back by an hour this year so they can get all the 3pm Football kickoffs finished and the results read out before the race.

In reality all it means is everyone has another hours worth of alcohol in them, and the bookies take another hours worth of bets.

It's an hour late this year

How many watch the Grand National at its new time of 5.15pm (BST) on April 9 will be almost as interesting as which horse wins.
Reaction to the news exclusively revealed in Sportsmail that the biggest race in the sporting calendar will have its latest ever start time to try to attract a bigger audience has largely been positive.
It was welcomed by bookmakers, with Coral betting on how many will watch. It is 6/4 for a return to the 10million-plus days when it was last shown on the BBC.

Since the VSOE started to arrived at Runcorn some years ago, there has been a fleet of luxury coaches to take them to Aintree via A561, A5300 (Knowlsey Express Way) and M57 with the same coaches taking the punters back to Lime St Street as it is easier to do due the majority of road traffic leaving Aintree to the M57 and M58.

.......

I think the original post to your answer knows that already as he was knowingly referring to the "Merseyrail" 3rd rail trains.

I'll be going tomorrow - my fifth visit.

Once in the 70s, once in the 80s, and three times in recent years.

In the 70s and 80s there were excursion trains which ran via the Bootle Branch from Edge Hill, the Goods Line(s) at the back of Bootle Oriel Road and New Strand and the North Mersey Branch (NMB) to Aintree. All of the track remains but the NMB is out of use and the Aintree platform(s) overgrown.

In the 70s the special trains included the Eastern Region's General Manager's Saloon (a Wickham DMU?) which presumably provided a trip out for major railway customers (NCB? British Steel? CEGB?). And senior managers ... ahem! :)

By the 80s I think there were just a couple of London trains using the Mk I FO sets and Class 40-hauled from ... wherever they took over from Electrics.

Tomorrow will be ... 507s and 508s!:-

Reported elsewhere that 222003 ran the 0847 Nottingham to Liverpool Lime Street and is currently on the 1152 Liverpool Lime Street to Nottingham.

Anyone who had a couple of quid on the winner of the National might even have recouped their rail fare!

After paying £125 per ticket for the Lord Sefton stand, only the jammy git who got a £260 return from Rule the World in our group stood any chance of breaking any where near even
