Folks Saturday just gone I saw a 7 coach Meridian from Whitworth Street Manchester heading east towards Oxford Road/Piccadilly, whats that all about? Presume Liverpool to Nottingham, could do with that capacity more regular!

Strengthened services for the Grand National at Aintree. Happens every year.

Provision of extra capacity for Grand National.
There's a thread about it here:-

Grand National.

Had forgotten all about the Grand National so that makes sense, was about 8pm as well

To be fair looked good, meridians on that route could be the way forward. Can never understand why leeds gets 4 express an hour from Manchester but Sheffield only 2. The sheffield trains always overloaded

There's 5 now but only 4 from Piccadilly. However, the plan was never for more than 4 services from either Victoria or Piccadilly.

The 6th service will effectively be the Victoria-Huddersfield stopper joined on to the Huddersfield-Leeds stopper with some stops removed and added to the Hull service and being run from Piccadilly instead of Victoria, with Liverpool-Scarborough moving to Chat Moss and Victoria.

Totally unsuitable for the route... Less capacity west of Nottingham and more capacity east of Nottingham, the opposite of what is needed... Lower permitted speeds on a large part of the route... More expensive to operate... A 5 car 222 has just 240 seats compared to the current 2 x 158 which has 292 seats, even the 7 car 222's have only 338 seats, though they could be reconfigured internally to increase seating capacity...

There are far more suitable routes for the 222's to be used to their full potential than this slow cross country route...
