Does anyone know what the oldest and newest locomotives still in daily revenue service.

Cheers
Russell

By my reckoning:

Oldest: Class 37s on the Cumbrian coast (built in the early 1960s)
Newest: Class 68s on the Chiltern Mainline and the Fife Circle.

Is the oldest of the lot the NR class 31? 31105 (if still active) dates from March 1959! I guess there could be an older 08 out there

I'd say some of the 08s are contenders for the oldest locos in daily service. Some of them were built as far back as 1952. Obviously without going through each one left in service and finding the build date, you wouldn't know, but as far as the oldest design goes..

I agree.

In 'class' terms, I think the class 20s are the oldest mainline (excluding shunters) loco design still in service (the first '20' was delivered before the first '31'), especially as all of the 31's were later rebuilt with EE diesel engines in 1964 so could be considered to be substantially non-original ;)

On the other hand we have 66779, new and unused, being kept under wraps for an unveiling event on May 10th. 68023, 24 and 25 were delivered on April 6th, so are probably yet to turn a wheel in revenue service. When they do, they will be the newest for a few weeks.

Lowest numbered 08 in active service could be 08389 at Cardiff Tidal according to WNXX. This one dates from 1958.

Thanks - there are several sites on the internet with build details. Also some years ago now Platform 5 did a book with all the build dates in them. Think it was called Diesel & Electric Loco Register?
