Pretty straightforward this one - how many, and which, stations are not on the UK mainland, but are on outlying islands.

Looking for stations on the National Rail Network, so any heritage railways, etc on islands don't count.

Isle of Sheppey: Queenborough and Sheerness-on-Sea
Isle of Wight: Shanklin, Lake, Sandown, Brading, Smallbrook Junction, Ryde St John's Road, Ryde Esplanade, Ryde Pier Head
Anglesey: Llanfairpwll, Bodorgan, Ty Croes, Rhosneigr, Valley
Holy Island: Holyhead

Are there any I've missed?

You're correct that Holyhead is on an island, but the island is Holy Island rather than Anglesey. It is in the county of Anglesey though!

Wow. Until now, I thought that Portsmouth was on the mainland and that that was a peninsula. I had no idea it was on an island (called Portsea Island)...

Do stations on piers count?
If so there's Hythe/Southport/Southend/etc.
I guess straits, chanels, & seas are needed to count as outlying, rivers shouldn't be used otherwise Isle of Ely, Isle of Lindsey, Isle of Axholme, Portsea, etc would count despite not appearing as real islands.

How about all the stations on the Isle of Thanet? Also, is there not a third, request stop station on Sheppey?

HOW about Blackfriars? Either end is on the mainland but the middle is above the (tidal) Thames... Yes, I'm stretching it a bit there, but no more than the Peninsula of Thanet!

(I'm no geographer, is Thanet a peninsula? Probably not...)

If we're being really silly, how about Burntisland? ;)

No. You'd be thinking of Swale, but it's on the mainland by about 100 yards, in the shadow of the newer Sheppey Crossing.

The Isle of Thanet hasn't been an island since about 1700, although once or twice flooding in the North Sea has made it temporarily so again. Most recently in 1953.

I had exactly the same thoughts about if there were any Merseyrail stations in Birkenhead directly underneath the east or west float, there aren't (although it did have its own railway with much of the line still in situ) but your right it would be stretching it somewhat.

54 stations in Northern Ireland if you want to list them all

Also does the IOM count?

Douglas - Port Soderick - Santon - Ballasalla - Ronaldsway Halt - Castletown - Ballabeg - Colby - The Level - Port St Mary - Port Erin.

Nope. The Isle of Man is not in the United Kingdom. Lucky old Isle of Man.

Regarding going silly, I can better that one.

Does Gibraltar have a railway station? (I genuinely ask as I'm not an expert on railways of Spain.) After all, for European Parliament representation and elections, it is part of England's South West Region.

No railways in Gib, unless there are Military Railways under the rock itself. The closest railway to Gib is over the bay in Algerciras. Gib is also firmly attached to Europe and is not an Island.

Looking at National Rail stations, so IOM and NI doesn't count.

Portsea is a real island, in historic terms. The modern gap between Portsea Island and the mainland has been narrowed on both sides by land reclamation and road construction to the extent it could easily pass for a man made channel, especially as seen from the rail crossing.

But then again in pre-historic terms even the Isle of Wight wasn't an island, depends how far you move your goalposts I suppose.

It isn't an island, but it definitely isn't part of the British Mainland. Therefore if it had a station that station would qualify! Likewise if what became the United Kingdom had retained territory in Normandy, any stations there would also be valid.

Ynyswen (White Island) - miles inland!

Also at least four level crossings named Ynys (Island) in Wales - again, none on an island AFAIK.

Anglesey Holy Island: Llanfairpwll, Bodorgan, Ty Croes, Rhosneigr, Valley, Holyhead
You need to re-correct. Anglesey has the first five, Holy Island has the last. They are both islands.

Because of the Caledonian Canal isn't any station north of Inverness or Fort Willian not technically on the mainland?

Only if the locks at both ends are open at the same time!

Yes, I know that's not technically true.

Ely is on land that was once upon a time an island until The Fens were drained (hence "Isle of Ely"
