This from Minster FM's newsroom tonight

http://www.minsterfm.com/news/local/1951734/latest---train-on-fire-on-a-viaduct/

Crews from Knaresborough, Harrogate, Boroughbridge, Ripon and Acomb are currently dealing with a fire on a train.
No passengers were on board and the train driver is safe.
The four coach train is on the viaduct across the River Nidd just outside the station.
Fire control says that's making it quite tricky to deal with.
They got the call from the railway at 23:30

Not seeing any passenger trains or ECS workings - the only thing nearest to the time would be 620W 2208½ Holbeck Loco Sidings to Knaresborough

A tamper and 142 running as a trial pairing, the idea is to see if the passengers can tell which is the most comfortable ............

Glad it isn't a unit or two that went up in smoke, that would be just what ARN need right now...

(as much as I'd like to see a couple of 142s get cooked!)

A four coach tamper?

Close. It is hoped an ordinary tamper will be able to pull a 442. The idea is that if there isn't enough traction available through the wheels it will be able to pull itself along by grabbing the sleepers one by one... :D

Because of course it is just a boring tamper and in no way a vastly expensive or important bit of engineering kit

With respect, you're putting words in my mouth there. At no point did I suggest that the tamper was unimportant, simply that as a passenger in West Yorkshire, the loss of a unit would cause more immediate problems. Of course the loss of the tamper could cause issues too, if track maintenance is put back due to a lack of equipment then speed restrictions might have to be imposed. The difference being that those effects would hit a few weeks further down the line (no pun intended!) whereas a unit shortage would result in short formations straight away.

Within earshot of trains passing the one and half

Hmmm. I think there are more "spare" passenger units (as a percentage) than there are double-bank high output tampers ...

The percentage of spare passenger units, of a type that could operate the Harrogate line, is surely zero.

we could try the Mki shovel? About 4000 should do it. ;)

I would suggest you might feel more of an impact if the line is closed and you have to get a bus because the track couldn't be handed back on time!

The track machine is still at Harrogate (now unsheeted). An attempt to remove it by road from Starbeck a few nights ago was abandoned after all the cranes and stuff had arrived, when it was apparently realised there would be insufficient time to carry out all the work.

That sounds an expensive mistake, given the costs involved in hiring cranes and low loaders etc.

Would the plan have been to drive it with the good cab up to Starbeck before craning it off the rails, or would it have to be towed?

Passed through Harrogate last night and never spotted it - was certain to make sure I looked out both sides of train. Where is it parked?

Siding at the east end of the station, town side. It was there yesterday afternoon.

There was quite a crowd of Network Rail / Volker Rail / Ainscough Crane engineers at Starbeck crossing around 1130 this morning discussing recovery, prehaps it's on the move this weekend
