Last night on University Challenge (York vs Peterhouse Cambridge) there was a round that Peterhouse got on... lesser-known and least-used UK rail stations. Questions were asked on:

-The most isolated station on the HoWL that shares its name with a mountain in Brazil (Sugar Loaf)

-Which line Altnabreac is on (The Far North Line, Peterhouse said 'The Fort William Line')

-Which county Berney Arms is in (Norfolk)

Peterhouse got the first and last. They were pitiful, however. They still won, because York took an early league but then didn't get to say anything.

Gawd, they were dire. They took a long time on every question - there was one arrogant guy on their team (Powell) who acted like the team had no chance if he personally didn't know the answer - and another guy (Sutcliffe) who made a hand gesture at Paxman when he got one wrong.

That's not bad.

I don't follow the programme myself, but I remember seeing an episode where the answers were Stanier, Bullied and Gresley and the round got blank faces.

Must be a repeat. I remember hearing those questions and answers on the show about two months ago.

It went out for the first time on April 4. There's two rail enthusiasts on the York team, as it happens.

I was, way back, given to understand that Peterhouse was the college predominantly populated by not very bright, obsessively sports-playing "hearties" (apologies to any alumni of said place)...
