Assuming it is a Any Permitted routed ticket, I know (without consulting the routing guide at this hour) Manchester to Euston is allowed, also allowed is Manchester - Birmingham - Euston, I therefore assume that Manchester - Birmingham -Marylebone and Manchester - Birmingham - Oxford - Reading - Paddington would be fine. In addition, I know that Manchester - Sheffield - St Pancras is also a permitted route.

I am sure someone will be along shortly to provide greater detail (or correct me if I am wrong). But I hope that gives you some food for thought.

BM + GC : Manchester to Birmingham via Stoke or Crewe, then Birmingham to London with Chiltern
RM + RG : Manchester to Reading via Stoke/Crewe, Birmingham, Solihull/Coventry, then Reading to London via Slough
MA: Manchester to London via Crewe/Stoke, then via Birmingham or Tamworth, as well as all lines in-between, and onwards direct or via Northampton to London
NR + BM + GC : Same as the first, but allows travelling via Warrington Central.
NR + MA : Same as MA, but allows for travelling via both Warrington Central.
NR + RM + PG : As the second, but once again also allowed via Warrington Central
PR : Manchester to Sheffield, then either via Nottingham or Derby to Leicester and London

....NR + BM + GC : Same as the first, but allows travelling via Warrington Central (not sure about via Eccles to WBQ)
NR + MA : Same as MA, but allows for travelling via both Warrington Central, as well as via Eccles to Warrington Bank Quay
NR + RM + PG : As the second, but once again also allowed via Warrington Central....

None of these allow travel via Eccles.

Although there are other tickets (such as a London-Ashton-under-Lyne "via Manchester" one) which would allow this at no extra cost, if cambsy doesn't need specifically to have a London-Manchester ticket.

There are quite a lot of tickets in the area for the same price off peak, so if there's a particular route cambsy would like to take, there probably is a ticket which will allow travel from London to Manchester using that route.

Stalybridge maybe, I can see a point of view for Ashton, but to be honest I think it's a pretty flimsy one with no benefit over Stalybridge.

Not convinced about that either, most stations in the area will use Manchester as the Routeing Point.

I'm not exactly what point you're trying to make here.

London-Manchester and London-Stalybridge each allow a lot of routes. A lot of these are the same in each case, but there are differences.

For instance, you can go from London to Manchester on maps GC+BM via Leamington and Lichfield, but you can't go to Stalybridge that way at all.

Meanwhile, you can go from London to Stalybridge on maps MA+MR via Earlestown and Manchester Picadilly, but that's not a valid route to Manchester itself.

A London-Ashton ticket can be used on either set of routes. If you buy an "any permitted" off peak ticket (which London-Stalybridge doesn't have), it's also slightly cheaper than the Manchester equivalent.

I don't think there's anywhere in Greater Manchester (or Merseyside, for that matter) which has a higher off-peak fare to London than Manchester Stations has. There are plenty of other routeing points in the area.

Ashton has two routeing points, one is Manchester Group (same routes as Manchester-London), the other is Stalybridge (SYB-London would allow travel via Victoria and Eccles, AHN-London would require travel via SYB and Piccadilly). Last I checked they were all the same fare.

Whilst many other Greater Manchester stations have the same fare, they may not have any better routeing options.
