There's warnings about the dangers of messing around near Greater Manchester's Metrolink after a boy was caught on camera lying down on the track.

A concerned passenger took the photo outside Wythenshawe Park station on the Manchester Airport line last month.

Metrolink say the boy’s stunt could have been potentially fatal and that his friends also risked serious injury by sitting on the platform edge with their legs hanging out.

I wonder if on the non-street running sections they should have a ban from people crossing the track and put bridges/underpasses in instead to be more like National Rail.

3 d!cks walking up the track from Holt Town to the Etihad Stadium in the evening before the PSG match. Getting reading to put a cone on the track. "Robust" comments from the passing supporters, calls to police and videos taken prevented a collision.

Just waiting for the usual apologists to give their reasons why such behaviour occurs...<(
To be fair, there isn't enough for teenagers to do, in a lot of areas.

However, the behaviour of some teenagers in that part of Manchester is disgraceful and inexcusable. I know, I've witnessed it myself.

Speaking as a teenager at a school in Manchester I couldn't agree more.

I dont know what you are on about....

On a more serious point it is a problem in Manchester the amount of times that behaviour like this and worse! I have seen on the Rochdale- East D line is shocking!

Yes same here (except I'm from the south), you tend to find its a certain class (aka the ones with the tracksuits and hoodies!)

Oddly didn't experience any of this behaviour from Chinese teenagers over the last month (other than a desire to sing Adele songs really badly in K-bars)

Metrolink is a line of sight system so people on the track may be inconvenient but not a major safety hazard. I'm far more concerned about the ones who tried to do this on platform 0 at Stockport a few weeks ago (but were very quickly spoken to by the staff).

It's not fully line of sight but the new lines are line of sight.

It is Wythenshawe after all. Were the parents on the opposite track, taking the photographs, to put up onto instatwitbookpageface?

So are the old lines, with the exception of the railway section at Altrincham (and has Bury been converted yet?). Wythenshawe is on one of the new lines.

The Altrincham line will not be converted for a while because of the sharing with Network Rail, Bury on the other hand is imminent line of sight is currently in operation up to Crumpsall for now.

Some Greater Manchester teenagers (a minority, I do emphasise) do seem to have an especially high level of stupidity/not giving a ****
(I grew up in Bolton, so can make that remark)

Like the group trying to surf on the side of my tram away from Audenshaw a while back by dangling off the hopper windows.

There is an element of "look how much of a smartarse I am [not]", which goes up exponentially when a member of the opposite sex is within a 100m radius.

Society emphasises to young people the importance of rights, not responsibilities.

Some of them are feral, but it's a smaller minority.

Other side of Manchester, but this is the sort of scumbags that are a blight on the Greater Manchester area:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-36089653
Footage showing youths stealing a bike from a 13-year-old boy has resulted in the launch of an online fundraising campaign.
More than £1,000 has been raised after the north Manchester robbery was captured on CCTV.
The victim had cycled to the shops on Bury New Road in Higher Cheetham when he was attacked on Monday afternoon.
Three boys believed to be around 16 - two of whom can be seen on CCTV - approached him and told him to get off his bike before one of them then made off on it.

I once made the mistake of cycling from Stockport to Brinnington on a mountain bike, when I had time to kill before an Advance from Piccadilly after a cycle ride in North Wales on a Saturday night. There are some seriously dodgy people in the GM area.

It doesn't surprise me what happened at Wythenshawe.

I'm currently working for one of the bidder on the Metrolink bid and leading on the revenue protection & Security sections.

When I was traveling around to explore the network and to collate our initiatives for our bid, I saw a huge amount of ASB and fare dodging going on.

At one stop, I saw two young girls, who were aged around 12-14 around 8-9pm. They wanted to cross from one platform to the other platform. Rather than going to the end of the platform and using the crossing to safely get across, they instead jumped down from the platform and just legged it across the platform. It was only a few seconds before a tram came in, with the stop on a bend. And guess which stop it was at????? Wythenshawe  Lets just say, I have plenty of initiatives up our sleeve to resolve this poor and unsafe behaviour :)

Nothing really changes over the years, except maybe the trains get faster, or newer, or more expensive. Kids just do things like that, and will continue to do things like that unless they are stopped. Many years ago I lived near a railway station, and most Friday nights the local kids were there, smashing it up, wrecking the toilets, headbutting the platform shelter etc, trying to impress their girlfriends. We got sick of the noise and would often go round there and make them leave. Sometimes they got lippy, but they took the hint in the end. We chased them up the road one night and they even apologised, but that was only because there were more of us than them. And a week later, they were back, doing the same again. After I'd moved, I heard they'd chucked a fridge on the 3rd rail.

I work in Wythenshawe, I live in Wythenshawe. Trust me, this is nothing compared to what some of these "kids" do on Metrolink and around the local area.
I got spat at by a 13 year old 2 weeks ago.

I imagine someone mistyped the heading, realised their mistake and corrected it but didn't realise the CMS automatically creates a link containing the original heading.

What is the legal age of "responsibility" these days....should such a matter exist?

There's no specific age in legislation other than parents can be held responsible for neglect in certain circumstances.

Going back to the original photo, I would suggest these lads are much less likely to be hit by a tram than those of any age who are engrossed by their smartphones or jigging along to their headphones (or both) on street-running tram sections, or on places where you cross the line.

I think it was inevitable there was going to be a little bit of trouble through Wythenshawe. The LUAS red line in Dublin is far worse though, the amount of junkies causing trouble makes it really quite intimidating.

You sincerely don't know what is stupud and reckless behaviour... in what regards stupid behaviour in relation to rail vehicules the uk is a paradise due to the serious atittude authorities have towards trespassing.
In Continental Southern Europe, where the atittude is "if you want to argue eith a train, go on... your bad" you see far worse behaviours although society is far less violent
