JMW Turner chosen for new £20 banknote. Will be released in 2020, and it will be polymer/plastic

Today, Bank of England Governor, Mark Carney, announced that J.M.W. Turner will appear on the next £20 banknote due to be issued by 2020. At the announcement at Turner Contemporary in Margate, the Governor revealed the image of Turner that will be used on the note

The selection of Turner is the first time the Bank of England has used the more open and transparent character selection process announced in December 2013. The process began in early 2015 with the formation of the Banknote Character Advisory Committee which as its first act selected the visual arts field. This was followed by a two month nomination period in summer 2015 ...

Is what you show a representation of the shape that it will be. I sincerely hope not.

No, worry not! All the future notes are shown slightly mis-shapen to restrict fraud or copying.

Here is the similarly boxed £5 redesign to be released this September

No. Polymer notes will be smaller than the current notes, but are (at least broadly) in the same proportions. These images show the design concepts, but the actual appearance of the note (with security features and so on) will be revealed much later, probably only a few weeks before they enter circulation.

JMW Turner is an excellent choice for the English £20 note. Will be good to see the back of Adam Smith, who already had his own banknote (although I've not seen an old Clydesdale 50 for a while).

So some sort of painter (which I had to look up details for who the heck he did to be worthy of a place on a bank-note) ...

On a related subject, the US is finally going to put a woman on their money. They chose Harriet Tubman for the $20 bill, but only on one side, and she, famous for freeing slaves, has to share it with Andrew Jackson, who was a slaveholder.

Oh, and it won't be released until 2030.

I like the Temeraire though.

Philistine! ;)

Perhaps we should have a RailUK Forums shortlist of who should be on the next tranche of banknotes? Stephenson the elder was on the £5 note a while back, so how about Brunel on the next £50? Beeching on the penny so he can be crushed into rails? Or Ernest Marples on the 9-bob note? <D

I'm on holiday in the USA at the minute and hate how similar all the notes look!

Although it'll be interesting to see the role of cash over the next 10-20 years when you can do so much by contactless and card these days - in terms of contactless it has a low limit at the moment but is so much faster than trying to dig out money and then wait for change! Just tap, beep, done!

My God but there's some ignorant people about - unless of course you're being ironic. You're not being ironic are you?

I must admit that “JMW” Turner meant nothing to me; it took me a few moments to identify the person as the artist, Turner (aided by the recognition of the Temeraire).

I'm rather underwhelmed by the design, though.

From what I understood, Chip and PIN cards were only just arriving in the US.

Probably his most recognisable picture in the background, but from our point of view would rain steam and speed GWR have been better? Or did he do anything of one of the mainline railways north of the Thames, like John Bourne?

Are the new bank notes all going to be the same size? I've just got a load of Canadian plastic bank notes and noticed they are all the same size with Braille on each one. They must have had plastic bank notes for a while in Canada as all dominations are plastic and I notice some of them have Mark Carney's signature on them.

From the BoE (http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/publications/Pages/news/2013/189.aspx)

The Bank consulted with the Royal National Institute of Blind People on the proposed size change and they have indicated their support. The polymer £5 note will measure 125mm in length and 65mm in height. Each subsequent denomination will measure 7mm longer and 4mm higher than the previous denomination; therefore the £10 note will measure 132mm x 69mm. These will be a little larger than the equivalent Euro notes.

So, like €uros and the existing Sterling, different notes will be different sizes. It's just that the new notes will all be slightly smaller than their existing paper counterparts.

Technically it's several blocks of raised dots (according to which note it is), not actual Braille. They were introduced on Canada's paper notes a decade or two ago. The dots get flattened over time on the paper notes, so were of limited use: many blind people chose to continue using a size gauge to identify notes. I don't know if the new polymer notes hold the dots any better, as I haven't been over there since they became widespread.
