That explains it - there was a guy at Edinburgh looking for the VTEC service to Kings Cross saying he was supposed to be going to Euston but got told to go to KGX instead.

These problems in possessions seem to be becoming quite commonplace.
I wonder if there are really more incidents occurring, or if it's just that possessions are so much tighter now that it means there's less time to recover when things go wrong?

There seem to have been a run of collisions (as distinct from mere derailments) in possessions. Perhaps there is something wrong with the safety systems?

Really? In the last 12 months how many collisions have occurred within possessions when weighed against the number of possessions that have actually been granted?

Should there be any?

Of course there shouldn't, but back to my earlier question - has there really been an increase in the number of incidents, or has there been a similar number of incidents just of a greater impact on passenger services?

Just caught a Rail Replacement from Carlisle to Preston. Have to doff the cap to the Virgin Staff on duty, doing their best in the circumstances. Overheard a couple discussing it was nice of their control to text at 0930 saying their was problems when they'd been on duty since 0500!

Any chance of a link to that tweet?

Today NRE is reporting "Major disruption between Preston and Carlisle":-

A broken down engineering train near Carnforth is causing disruption to trains between Lancaster and Carlisle. This is expected to continue until 14:00.

Is this "broken down" train the same one that was causing the problems yesterday or a different one connected with the Oxenholme work?

A different one!

(yesterday's culprit was a tamper near Lancaster station)

Writing this on Mk4 to go from Edinburgh to Lancaster via York because of this. Really annoyed at all the WCML issues lately, although of course this is nothing compared to Lamington.

Long queue for coaches at Carlisle going south.

Daventry to Mossend Tesco train passing through Carlisle station platform 1 at 1224 northbound. 100 minutes late.

One 8 car TPE 350 sat in one of the middle roads.
One 11 car and one 9 car Pendolinos sat In spare roads west of platform 1.
One 5 car voyager sat in north bound bay platform.
TPE using platform 3 for reversing trains - one Pendolino.
Virgin using platform 4 for reversing
trains - one 350.

So 7 units at about 1235.

How come an intermodal train got through the block but no passenger trains?
If RTT is to believed this train arrived at Mossend only 1 minute down (by avoiding scheduled stops en route).

Presumably trains could run through at caution in one direction only?

Fine for freight trains, but not much point sending lots of passenger trains one way without sending any the other (thus trapping all the available stock north of Carlisle)

Would I be right in thinking the northbound Virgin trains all terminated at Preston? I thought that the new crossover at Lancaster was built so that their trains could terminate at Lancaster - that's certainly one of the reasons given in all the media hype when there were the closures for the work to be done. So has the crossover actually been finished and if so, is it ever used?

The crossover at the south end of Lancaster is used pretty much daily mainly for arriving ECS and has been was in use over the weekend for terminating trains. Preston is a much bigger station than Lancaster and is better suited to handle large numbers of passengers transferring road to rail and vice versa although I feel some kind of rail service should be provided to Lancaster when the line is blocked north of there.

They were all turning back from Platform 3 on Saturday due Engineering Work

Everything terminated/started from Preston today presumably because Virgins train crew depot is there, and the layovers probably mean right time starts back south?

3 hour journey for me today turned into a 5 hour one. I think the first southbound train (a special!) left Carlisle just after we left in the coach - saw it overtake us at Shap!

(possible that a Manchester Airport train may have left first)
