Thanks in advance for any help its much appreciated

Either of the island platforms. I thought they were 1 - 6 from south to north but I was corrected on here, although I still believe 2&3, 4&5 are the best.

You can go right up to the end of the platforms and get a good view of all roads.

I've found that Trent Valley has the most freight going to/from Rugby and so I would recommend platforms 2&3 (essentially the old 1&2 in the middle) as the freight normally either passes through the platforms, or parks and waits for a path onto the Northampton loop

no worries.

hailing from the area and all my family having worked on the railway, there are a few other cheeky places you can go to - NOT trespassing I hasten to add.

For those that are aware of it, one of my best mates lives at Tank Cottages. You can try "the black path" too for some good shots

Confused here. The platforms are 1-6 from south to north, as you first wrote. The sides of the main island are P2 (down) & P4 (up), P3 is the relatively quiet bay on the inside of P2 at the London end. Hence the new up island is P5/6

Almost all Northbound freight goes through platform 2. If you want to photograph that the best place is on platform 1.
Some Southbound freight uses platform 5 but the vast majority passes on platform 6. Often freights will wait in the up goods line of which the North end of platform 5 provides a good view.
At the South end the very end of the bay (platform 3) provides a decent view of traffic both North and South.
If you're not coming by train the platforms are all barriered now but the staff will let you on if you tell them why your there.

As others have said, I tend to use platforms 2/4 when at Rugby. I've never had a problem with the staff either.

yep, that's it, I always forget the bay. been a while since I've been there.

Yeah staff are normally quite friendly, Virgin staff so they've been trained properly :)
