Happy Birthday Queen Elizabeth

I know I'm a few days late, but I've just realised that we haven't had an official forum thread to celebrate the birthday of our favourite monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. I have to say, in spite of my opinions of the monarchy (i.e. I despise the institution and would abolish it given half the chance), I do think that Elizabeth has served us well and has been a brilliant ambassador for our country. I may strongly disagree with how she got the job, but I think it's fair to see that she is a real inspiration, still going strong at ninety.

To celebrate the occasion, the Daily Mail have unveiled perhaps their stupidest story to date. Don't have nightmares, kids.

I am a fan of the monarchy. I agree it is a stupid system, but yet it oddly works. Constitutional monarchies, where the monarch is head of state but has no real power, are the most stable form of democracy, because all political power rests with parliament, there's no fighting legislature vs executive, as you get in presidential systems.

I went to see the Cutty Sark royal beacon being lit the other night - have to say I was disappointed, it was a flame in a bowl on a stick. I was expecting a big bonfire you could see for miles.

To answer your question, in theory constitutional monarchy doesn't work, as the monarch cannot exist without power, in theory. In practice, it has been proven to work.

That's the way the modern world works. We don't live in the Middle Ages anymore where parliament was merely a comedic slideshow and the monarchy had to deal with death threats, abdication and conspiracies on a daily basis whilst trying to govern the country.

The ultimate power still lies with the monarchy, it's just parliament deal with the day-to-day matters.

I think that the Queen's Speech is a complete waste of time and money. I cannot fathom why the PM writes a speech to be read out be a now 90 year old woman.

However, in terms of representing the country on the global stage, I think she has performed her role very well. I would abolish the monarchy in a heartbeat, but that doesn't mean that I do not recognise that work that Queen Elizabeth puts in on a daily basis.

Remember that the genes of Diana entered into the gene pool of the children of Charles and Diana, with the effect that new blood at least shows in the visual imagery of both their two sons, Harry and to a lesser effect in William.

William and Kate then have children with yet another addition of Kate's genes to the gene pool which surely would leave their children with even less of a visual imagery in comparison to Queen Elizabeth, as the face of the child George in the picture looks nothing like him in real life and would best serve to warn what inbred monarchical lines in the distant historical past could expect to bestow on those so unfortunate to come out of such liaisons.
