Hope this is the right place to post this.

I'm going to Derby on Sunday. Not been there before. I would like to get some photos of the diesels that are normally there so was wandering if anyone can give me any advice on where to go.

I've heard of places like Etches park and RTC. Are these places worth visiting and, if so, are they within walking distance of the station.

Thanking you all in advance for any help. Much appreciated.

The RTC is, as far as I know, only visible from passing trains - and the EMT depot is on the opposite side of the line at the same location; however it is possible to photograph the stuff in the depot from passing trains, but you may need more than one pass each side to get everything that's there.

I went a couple of weeks ago to grab numbers, and ended up taking a trip to Long Eaton and back. Focused on the EMT depot on the way out (left-hand side in direction of travel), and then the network rail site on the way back (again, left-hand side in direction of travel. If you time it right you only end up waiting at Long Eaton for 7 or so minutes before returning.

You can also try the shorter trip to Spondon, but if I remember rightly there are fewer trains per hour, and longer to wait for a return working.

If you're photographing then you may need a few trip as well!

There's also the Roundhouse, Great Northern, Midland Railway buildings which are worth a look. I strongly suggest you visit Markeaton Park in Derby, a unique McDonalds is nearby and there's the City of Derby loco which runs a passenger service around the park, very fun. It's a great city, the Eagle Market was good and the City Centre in general. Buses are a bit steep though.

In respect of the RTC you would probably expect to see half a dozen loco's there including a couple of resident class 08's. However on the Etches Park side, whilst the depot is a fair size you're only likely to see Meridians and perhaps the resident depot class 08. Other than that your only hope for anything else will be if something has turned up to have it's wheels turned.

However, the RTC is a few minutes walk down London Road and I would be very surprised if the security guards allowed anyone to go walkabout. In other words I fear that the OP would be in for a wasted journey.

Without checking the Spondon train service is rather spartan on a weekday let alone a Sunday! In all honesty getting off at Spondon would not be a good idea.

Given that Markeaton Park is the other side of the city centre and then some, unless the OP is driving it's quite a journey just for a McDonalds and a ride on a miniature railway.

Thankyou very much for the replies, Guys. Very much appreciated.

I ended up doing as 'Palmersears' suggested and took the train to Long Eaton and back. Quite pleased with the phots I got too.

Thanks again for your help everyone.
