Like with the additional trams, they had funding so managed to get them in one order to get them cheaper and it means additional capacity at an earlier date. I think they have been very lucky with funding so why not put the money in and start getting a return earlier? I can't see the Trafford Line being quite as fast as surely 2CC will be finished before building starts on that line. And who knows about future lines!

Does anyone think that it will be a good idea to open a new thread upon the proposed new line that you mention above? Just an idea.

Good idea.

This should see some movement early in 2017.

Pedantic comment: Shouldn't it be the Trafford Centre Line, after all, the Altrincham line already serves much of Trafford (Altrincham, Timperley, Sale, Stretford)

Think its officially being called the Trafford Park line rather than centre line.

EU funding may become irrelevant if the prospect or the reality of Brexit cripples the government financially, as is entirely possible.

In the application for the order they said this:

The cost of implementing the proposed Order, including funding of the costs of acquiring land, which is blighted land within the meaning of section 149 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, is expected to be met out of the Greater Manchester Earnback Deal. Funding from other sources as may be available will be pursued by Transport for Greater Manchester.

They may well have said this and they certainly wouldn't have spent money on seeking the order, let alone on commissioning a detailed design, unless they were pretty confident that they would be able to pay for it. However after the last 24 hours I'd say any funding from any branch of the British state that isn't yet signed and sealed is in doubt.

It is signed and sealed. They devolved business rates in the last budget.

Of course if the economy goes to pot then ther may not be much uplift in tax revenues.

Some time has elapsed since the last posting was made, so I wonder if there are any further project updates as yet in terms of a Governmental statement which allows matters to formally proceed.

If a public body is pursuing any form of Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO), then a funding statement has to be included in the proposals stating that you can afford to implement your proposals - and you must be able to defend such a statement at any subsequent Public Inquiry.

That is, you can't have the powers to compulsory purchase until you have shown that you can actually carry out your threat. Otherwise, potentially, people / businesses could have their property blighted by an approved CPO which the public body had no way to complete due to a lack of money. Once a CPO is issued you can force the public body to buy your affected property, whether they want to or not. PS that's a nice simple interpretation of a rather complex procedure.

The contract to build the Trafford Park extension is to be awarded to MPT.

http://www.constructionenquirer.com...ke-jv-wins-350m-metrolink-trafford-extension/

Transport for Greater Manchester has been cleared to enter into contracts with the M-Pact Thales consortium and WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff for the delivery and management of the scheme.

The new 5.5km Metrolink Trafford Park line will go from Pomona to Trafford Park via the Imperial War Museum.

Laing O’Rourke and VolkerRail will be responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the civil engineering and track, while Thales will deliver the tram operating systems.

Preliminary utility diversions by Electricity North West will start next week allowing the joint venture to start work in late January.
