While I don't recognise it myself, it may help others if you can give us a sense of scale. How large is it?

I will ask my dad in the morning but I am guessing it will be around 6 to 8 inch

I have spoken to my dad and he says it's about 4" by 2"

Looks a bit rusty to be brass. The font looks vaguely Germanic - not sure why.

Is that rust or just muck? There appears to be a hint of green on the bottom of the 6 which would suggest brass.

It's just muck as far as I am aware, he is knows his metals so I doubt he is wrong.

I have spoken to him and he now believes it may have come from an old telegraph pole

The number doesn't match with any BR locomotives. The range 80000-89999 was used for BR standard design tank engines, but no numbers were allocated above 84029, according to this list. I can't think that any pre-nationalisation companies would have numbered their engines that high.

Possibly a plate off some kind of wagon ??

I agree it looks like a German font. If he thinks it is off a telegraph pole try the Facebook or website of the utterly bizarre 'Telegraph pole appreciate society'!

I don't think it's anything to do with railways, especially being brass.
