:) Suggestions please for possible ticket split(s) for a midweek day return from Manchester Stns to Peterborough and back.

One adult travelling, no railcard, need to be in Peterborough for 1130, walk-up ticket(s) preferred, any reasonable route considered, but would prefer to travel via Doncaster. Can travel from/via Stockport if that helps any.

Anytime return is £100.90, I believe.

One option would be:

Manchester-Doncaster "via Sheffield" offpeak return: £21.90

Doncaster-Peterborough offpeak return: £46.50

The main further saving to be made is by using Advances between Doncaster and Peterborough in both directions, but that presupposes you can fix a return time in advance.

That's a good call. You can save a further £2.50 by splitting at Grantham, but you might need an extra change of train to do that (some of the trains that stop at Grantham don't stop at Peterborough), so hardly worth it.

:D Thanks. That's a decent one-third saving.

Presumably, I can pay a small "change of route" excess if, after calling at Doncaster, I want to travel back via Leeds on the way back?

If you were doing this tomorrow, these trains should work on weekdays:
0820 Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield arr 0908 (TP to Cleethorpes)
0924 Sheffield to Doncaster arr 1005 (NT to Scunthorpe)
1017 Doncaster to Peterborough arr 1107 (VTEC to London Kings Cross)

In theory you should be able to get a change of route excess, either from the ticket office or guard on the VTEC. The fare via Leeds is £25.40, so take £21.90 off that leaves £3.50, so a single change of route excess should be half that at £1.75. I'll let someone else confirm that.

:( The booking clerk at Manchester Piccadilly was quite insistent that the change of route excess ticket, for the return trip only, would be charged at £3.50, so I bought the excess at Doncaster instead.
