I have a whole free day in newcastle after getting the 8.11 from doncaster(got 1st as havent used it for sometime) so looking forward to trying the breakfast.
Can anybody suggest an idea for an intinery for that day ?(I am not bothered about certain trains etc) just want to travel over a few different routes.
The next day I am taking the 12.28 gc service from Sunderland to York(just to try it out) got a nice cheap 1st advance. Is it likely to be a 180 or hst please :)? (Don't mind which !)

Also is the a day ticket I can get for the area? As I couldn't see a single day one

Any help much appreciated!

DarloRich is probably in the right area with the rangers. Tyne Tees Day Ranger better for skipping round the North East, however you have to go via Yarm to get to Northallerton from Darlington or vice versa.
Greggs and Subway just outside the central station, Union Rooms about 5mins walk away for nearest Wetherspoons too. However if you walk up Pink Lane the street between subway and Greggs, walk up there and theres a pub called the Forth, which is a canny pub too.
12.28 according to Real Time Trains is an HST

The 1228 from Sunderland is usually a HST. Whitby is certainly a recommended route to travel on.

Thanks guys, the ranger looks like the one, need to do a bus trip out to Craghead as was born there, but have never actually been back since very young, so now is my chance.

Ranger looks like the way to go and has provided me with a usual map to work out a route!

As was my wife! Wagtail Terrace. Her aunt still lives in Craghead.

Best way to get to Craghead is the 16/16A from Durham bus station (every 15 min) or the 78 from Chester le Street (think that is half hourly)

If you are interested in getting some lines in in the north east using your Tyne tees day ticket, be aware that you can easily link Durham to Bishop Auckland by bus (6- every 15 mins) and also Whitby and Saltburn (4/X4 every 30 mins). These buses nicely link up the dead ends on the map. Sadly they are not included in the day ranger ticket, but a 7.80 Arriva day ticket will cover them all. If U want to fit in Craghead as well- you will need an explorer ticket as mentioned above. hth

Thank you everyone for help given!

Not very impressed with the 1st class service on Virgin, but managed to get breakfast in the end which actually was pretty decent!

Trip went very well, ended up getting of at Durham instead as had purchased the North East Rover Ticket, So took the bus from Durham over to craghead and caught a TPE from Durham up to Newcastle,

Did the metro all the way round, over to hexham and then down to Seaham. Did All the metro,

Next day went down the coast on the bus to go to Blackhall , nice bit of coast line. Caught the Grand central train, very impressed with the service on the train and was offered many cups of coffee. Got of at York. Service between York and Doncaster was much better then previous day (i realise its a quieter service)

I really do like that bit of coast south of sunderland

I would certainly do Grand Central again if ever in the area
