I get confused with the whole idea of Northern afternoon peak restrictions as I usually travel with a Metro but not currently in work so don't have one at the moment.

Anyway travelling from Castleford to Saltaire on Tuesday, if I depart Castleford on a service prior to the afternoon peak coming into effect am I then allowed to finish my journey on the off peak ticket even though I'll be travelling through the peak by that point?

Northern's FAQs on this subject state that if your journey begins before 16.01 you can complete journey on THAT train but ticket isn't valid on a connecting service that departs at 16.01 or later.

So, to answer your question ...
You can travel Castleford through to Saltaire on Off Peak only if your Leeds to Saltaire train departs Leeds before 16.01. If your train from Castleford train leaves before 16.01 but not early enough to catch a train on from Leeds before 16.01 you will need a Peak ticket from Leeds to Saltaire. You could buy a Peak single from Leeds ticket office, or conductor on Cas to Leeds train (if he/she is willing) but don't try to buy one on Leeds to Saltaire train, buy it a Leeds station.

I'll let others comment on upgrading tickets.

Easiest answers - buy Peak (Anytime) ticket (£8.10 against £6.30 Off Peak) in first place or come back earlier so your leaving Leeds before 16.01.

It's fairly simple, if you use a time restricted ticket at a time when it is not valid you will be charged the difference between the fare already paid and the cheapest available through fare that would be valid for the journey(s) made, or, if cheaper, a new single ticket.

Thanks, in the end I actually managed to squeeze the entire journey in just before peak time (15:56 from Leeds), I couldn't believe how busy the Skipton train was on another note! Do people working in Leeds clock off at 3:30pm or something?!

Interestingly the conductor that sold my ticket on the Castleford train only seemed to be interested in what time I was returning rather than anything about connections but there you go...at least they asked if I wanted an off-peak or not rather than automatically trying to sell me the alternative!

The 1556 from Leeds certainly didn't used to be that busy, there was space without standing when I used it a few times in 2013 and 2014.

And I bet the first service when the evening peak kicks in rivals a Gatwick terminator Gatwick Express for most fresh air carried ;)

And like the virgin services I bet the first service after evening peak is rammed solid

Many tickets used on northern trains will be longer distance without the afternoon peak element, and many will be on season and anytime tickets anyway through virtue of having travelled in the morning peak.

I hate missing the last peak train on the wcml, as all the peak trains are empty, where all the off peak trains are at best crowded, even after 9pm.
