I have been watching the splendid set of educational films made for NR by 'PICTURASCOPE', finding them interesting and informative. However, they all seem to have intrusive music behind the lecturer's voice, and I found that in some cases the music was so loud that I could not hear what was being said. One or two of the films I 'watched again' specially to see if the music added anything to the story, and in my opinion it didn't, - at all. It might be used as a lead-in to the film (and a tail-out as well) to, as it were "Set the mood" but having it chuntering away all the time is irritating - to say the least. I have noticed that some U-tube posters have decided to add music their offerings as well, and it really puts me off. Whadyerthik?

I haven't seen the specific films you mention but this has been one of my pet hates in relation to most TV documentaries for the last 10 years or more.

I have no idea how adding music to an instructional film could possibly raise any revenue, even with a smile and a wink!

There will be a 'natural' soundtrack to the visuals, almost certainly recorded together with them, but usually we are not given that. Machines, vehicles, nay - environmments all - make noises: sighs, roars, patters, clinks, squeeks, clickety-clacks, hums and buzzes, and it all helps with completing the picture and the story being presented. Mind you, I notice that many people out there in the street, on the station platform even, blot out the sounds around them with a preferred sound track delivered via a white (always white - why is that?) ear-piece from some doofah carried about the person, so perhaps drowning out 'real' sound in favour of musak is on trend. Heaven preserve us from all things trendy.
