Note; I'm not writing this to save money - although that's nice! - it's just I've always used a travelcard in London, not contactless, so some stuff puzzles me!

Here goes;
Saturday.
(1) Euston Tube to Stratford Tube - one journey; tap in, tap out. I get that.
Alternative
(2) Euston Tube to Camden Town ....tap in/out then walk to Camden High Road (Rail) to Stratford tap in/out.

So there are two valid routes, one involves leaving a station and walking, but it's still the same leaving and arriving point, an two zones.

How is the single fare worked out (ie for (2) are there two single fares added together?)

IIRC Camden Town to Camden Road is a valid "Out of Station Interchange" (OSI) so it is treated as one journey.

Yes OSI's do exist :), just be careful if travelling in the opposite direction on Sundays at Camden, as i do believe Camden town is exit only AFAIK.

Saturday 11th.

Would like to pop into CT for a look round before going to the game. Not bothered coming back, will take a different route.

I'm not an expert on Oyster charging, but if my understanding is correct you have to tap out/in at either end of the OSI within a set time (20 minutes?) or the system won't link up the two journey segments and you will get charged two single journeys.

Correct, and it is 20 minutes. However, Camden Road to Stratford is only a zone 2 journey (£1.50) so won't cost as much as Euston to Camden Town (£2.40). You could also consider walking or getting a bus (£1.50) as alternatives to the one or two stop tube hop.

That 20 minutes is good to know - I'd certainly have fallen foul of that!

Just to add a degree of detail it isn't a standard time of 20 min across the LU/NR network though, it varies depending on service frequency and interchange complexity and to allow for the fact that people changing from LU to NR may often have to wait in the concourse until their connection is on the departure boards. The time allowed may vary by direction across the same interchange for this reason. There are a few less than 20 min, but many where LU>NR is 40 min and the same place NR>LU is 20 min.

MikeWh has put a list on his site here: http://www.oyster-rail.org.uk/osi-list/

If you always use a travelcard then the thing to focus on is the daily cap, which significantly reduces the cost of a day's worth of travel.
