Last night Southern continued to ruin their reputation and cancelled the last train between Cosham and Havant (and further beyond, presumably Littlehampton or Brighton) even though there was a large music event with a relatively high attendance right next to Cosham station.

If there was an SWT ECS movement from PMH to FTN carriage sidings at a similar time and all variables were good (route knowledge, engineering works, working hours etc) would it have been possible to run a shuttle journey from Fareham to Havant?

I appreciate its extra outlay for SWT with no return so they probably wouldn't have wanted to, as well as the fact that some trains passing through the area were subject to heavy fouling according to a guard's Twitter feed, but I'm just wanting to know how flexible the railway is when all the variables are good.

Could it be the train was cancelled because of the damage done on previous services.

If people wish to go to festivals and expect public transport, they have to learn to respect that transport when it arrives.

Having looked at RTT it's listed as crew shortage for the cancelled Sourhsmpton - Littlehampton service.

It would appear also that a train was sent ECS from Fratton to Southampton to run an extra service back into Portsmouth.

Thanks for your answer Naja

So in context with my opening post, if the variables were good then there was nothing to stop said extra service from running providing the crew were happy to?

There's a couple of big "if's" in there, but there is nothing in the scheduling system that would have prevented an additional service being slotted in.

I've known a VSTP schedule be created for a train (admittedly freight) that was already on the move, on at least one occasion!

Happens quite regularly when "Management of Freight Services During Disruption" (MFSDD) has been declared.

I've never really had much to do with that side of things, so can't really comment. I can well imagine it though. The one that I remember was on a perfectly routine night, albeit with planned diversions...the TRC was in a bit of flap because there were barely any spare paths through my patch. We managed to find a way to make it work on the understanding that I had authority to run an assortment of other freights early to get them out of the way!

They certainly do, often without informing the Driver!! Running 3 hours late you get put in a loop to be told you are running early!! Not good when its your last job or you are going to bust 12 hrs

We used to receive a fax* whenever a seriously delayed freight was retimed - I can't remember the exact wording, but the implication was that such trains could be allowed to run (or keep running) early without specific authority from Control. I suppose that means that it can't then run on a tight margin that might risk knocking something else (whereas a late runner sometimes justifies knocking something else to minimise the overall delay).

* - apart from one box where the system that sent the fax out had the phone number rather than the fax number. It used to try three times, at 10-15 minute intervals. Always welcome at 0300 on a quiet night!!
