Following the house fire on the stretch of track above yesterday, I was searching for a file I found online a couple of years or so ago. It mentioned every crossing between Retford and Newark (although maybe not Grove Crossing as it is controlled by Ranskill north of Retford) and gave some detail about the operation of them I believe. I can't remember whether it was a PDF, Powerpoint or just on a webpage (I think the first two are the most likely), but I can't find it anywhere now. Note that I'm almost certain that it was before the crossing closure consultations so please ignore documents about this if you are searching.

I know the procedure for closing a manually controlled crossing as Signalboxes.com talks about this, but I'd love to dig out this document again about this stretch of the line if I can find it.

Does anyone know about the document I am talking about and can anyone locate it for me?

Many thanks

Ryan

It's a good website, but it's not the one I'm after. It mentioned several level crossing in one document and I'm sure it was a PDF or maybe a PPT. It's quite a while ago so details are sketchy but I found it interesting and want another look if I can find it, assuming it's still online.

A couple of years ago Network Rail published proposals for closing or bridging all level crossings between Hitchin and Doncaster. There were sectional documents for each county affected.

All seems to have gone quiet. I read somewhere that Network Rail may have dropped the idea, but I don't know for a fact. A pity if they have; I thought it a good idea.

There's this page on the NR website:

http://www.networkrail.co.uk/improvements/east-coast-main-line/ecml-level-crossings/

The feasibility study into closing level crossings on the East Coast Main Line between London and Doncaster as part of our commitment to deliver a safer, more efficient and reliable railway ended on 6 June 2015.

The results of the survey were extremely helpful and we would like to re-iterate our appreciation to all those who contributed. The results have allowed us to develop a preferred option for each crossing and a detailed understanding of the steps that would be required to close them, as well as the impact these closures would have on the communities nearby.

Based on the information we have gathered, we have decided not to go ahead with a single programme of level crossing closures. Instead we will take a case-by-case approach, looking to close level crossings as part of other planned improvement work over the next five-year funding period (2019-2024) and beyond, or where an opportunity for closure becomes apparent due to development activity in surrounding areas.

It is our intention, where possible, to update you towards the end of this year on which level crossings may be subject to further work with a view to closure. In the meantime if you have any questions, please contact the Network Rail National Helpline on 03457 11 41 41 or by emailing [email protected] quoting "East Coast Main Line level crossing closures".

Presumably "this year" was 2015.

I followed the details of a few of the consultations. My general impression is that local consultees tended to favour more expensive options than those favoured by NR.

There's this parliamentary question and answer:

Hi.

There was a leaflet handed out to JoPublic a few years ago about the level crossing closures between Grantham and Peterborough (Greatford, Tallington, Lolham, Maxey Road, Helpston and Woodcroft).

It was one of those NR feasability study pamphlets. Ive still got my copy of it floating around somewhere, however Im reliably informed that none of them are going to close in the near future.

Good news for me as Im sure if they close the crossings, the fences will be put further back from the rails and I will lose vantage points...

...mind you, I now live pretty close to a major freight route! :D
