I have a season travelcard from East Croydon to Guildford via Clapham. As I sometimes return from Woking, is that allowed?

Yes it is.

5.4 Season Tickets

5.4 Season Tickets

A season ticket offers the holder unlimited travel between the origin and the destination during its period of validity. A season ticket also offers the holder unlimited travel to/from any intermediate station along any permitted route between the origin and the destination...

Try pointing that condition out to the barrier staff at Gatwick Airport. They told me that my Southampton to Croydon (via Barnham) season was only valid to change trains at GTW and not to leave the station.

GTR making up rules again. I have a season valid to/from Haywards Heath or Crawley to/from London zones 2-6 and it works the barriers at Gatwick, so I don't have any problem. What was the outcome of the incident?

As far as I am aware, season tickets permit entry and exit at all intermediate stations on the route(s) covered by the season ticket (i.e. break of journey) - no exceptions.

A row, but the barrier staff caved in without anyone else getting involved. It did result in me trawling the CoC in case there was something special about Gatwick. My Gold Card wouldn't work the barriers - I think they tend to reject longer distance tickets there, for some reason.

Correct - the only "exceptions" that come to mind are where a permitted route includes a doubleback within a Routeing Group, when it would not be permitted to exit at a station beyond the doubleback point, or where a route is permitted because of an easement worded "customers travelling from x to y may travel via z".

(Both are somewhat debatable, especially the latter, but not relevant to Gatwick).
