News is breaking on BBC that Jo Cox, Labour MP for Batley and Spen, has been shot and/or stabbed in an incident at a constituency surgery at Birstall Library in West Yorkshire

BBC: An MP has been injured amid reports of a shooting and stabbing in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-36550304

Media sources on twitter ( Mirror and Sky) say the MP has been flown to hospital in a very serious condition, that there was an altercation, The Mirror suggests "Britain First" was shouted before the shot and that a 52 year old man has been arrested.

From the various media statements: a woman in her 40s, believed to be Jo Cox MP, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with serious injuries in a critical condition.

Oh dear, when was the last time we had such a serious attack against an MP? I hope that they recover and it's interesting to note that "Britain first" was shouted. Concerning.

The last incident I recall

BBC said:
A woman stabbed Labour MP Stephen Timms twice at a constituency surgery in revenge for his vote for the Iraq war, the Old Bailey has heard.

The Labour MP for East Ham said he thought Roshonara Choudhry wanted to shake hands when she smiled before lunging at him in Newham on 14 May (2010.)

Miss Choudhry told police she wanted "to get revenge for the people of Iraq", prosecutors said.

I hope that they recover and it's interesting to note that "Britain first" was shouted. Concerning.

Does someone have a problem with the work Ms Cox did for Oxfam or something?

The Mirror now report eye witnesses claiming the MP was shot 3 times and others who tried to help were shot and stabbed. Terrible and so pointless.

BBC report that the police indicate this is not a terrorist matter

From what i understand all campaigning for Thursday has been suspended. Cameron did not go to Gribraltar. If connected to the June 23 vote, than this is a serious low.

There still doesn't seem to be a clear consensus over whether or not "Britain first" was shouted. Some sources have reported this but others say it wasn't shouted. It's probably best to leave it a while until we have a clear picture.

Rest in peace, Jo Cox. What a terrible incident and the coward responsible needs to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

There is currently a press conference being given by West Yorkshire Police, and it has been confirmed that Jo Cox has died from her injuries.
Terrible, shocking news.

News coming though from Sky News that the Labour MP has died after being shot.
The person behind this should face the maximum prison snetence available.

Absolutely shocking, I really don't know what else to say other than my thoughts go out to her family and friends.

The perpetrator will obviously be dealt with in due course through the legal system.

Its a very sad incident. Our MPs are in public and approachable, thats a strength of our democracy, they shouldn't feel afraid of nutters and i hope they don't.

Very sad for her family and her constituents. I am a party member so know that behind each MP is a close knit team of assistants and supporters both in the constituency and beyond, and this is felt by us all. RIP.

Murder. R.I.P. to a brilliant young MP, wife, and mother.

Police are saying that 'this wasn't a terrorist matter'. But it is a terrorist matter! It's not an Islamist one, but it's still terrorism.

Absolutely vile attack, and if it were up to me the murderer and his ideals would recieve zero publicity from the press. I wouldn't publish his name or picture, and would let him rot in gaol in complete anonymity.

Why is it a terrorist matter?

Terrorism:

The Oxford English Dictionary describes this as 'the unofficial or unauthorized use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims'.

There was clearly something political here.

Another planet...
Jo Cox was my local MP, I met her at local meetings and she was a very dedicated woman who had an awful lot of time for her constituents. Absolutely shocking that something like this could happen so close to home. My thoughts are obviously with her family and friends right now, so I won't go into my thoughts on the perpetrator of this shocking and vile attack.

The fact someone was walking round Birstall centre in broad daylight carrying a gun in their bag is sickening

A horrible attack, and thoughts are with her family tonight.

Some reports are saying the man accused is linked to far right groups, so I am not sure why he has targeted this MP. In the past, attacks on MPs have been for simply nonsensical reasons, such as the 2000 Samurai Sword attack in Gloucestershire. Unfortunately mentally disturbed people can often blame MPs and authority figures for the problems they are imagining.
