Does anyone know of any resources, internet or otherwise, about railway uniforms? Of particular interest is the uniform worn by Midland Mainline train crews. Any advice warmly received.

What people reply might vary according to what you actually want to know. In the absence of knowing that, I would suggest that the most obvious thing to do is to go to your nearest Midland Main Line station, find someone long-serving and ask them!

And do not forget a look for videos filmed at relevant stations, these will probably feature mainly the trains, but often include staff a well.

Forgive my economy of words but I entered my original post on a smart phone. I have recently acquired an interest in railway uniforms as I like to wear uniform from the 80's and 90s when I am working as a guard on a heritage railway. It is good to know what was available as you rely on something novel appearing on Ebay.

There is actually an anecdote as to why the Midland Mainline is so prominent in my mind. One morning after a night shift, I was catching a train from Sheffield which was going to Leeds. As I remember it, the driver had not turned up timely because the clocks had gone forward. Also on the train was a Midland Mainline guard going to pick up his train from Leeds. The uniform was distinctive which seemed to undermine the guard's anger as he was quite justifiably annoyed.

I do not live near an MML station anymore but we do have one train which comes from St Pancras to Scarborough in the high season on a Saturday.

Good idea, I shall have to get myself on U Tube. I had thought of going to the library in the York Railway Museum.

Many of the heritage railways do have second hand type stalls where you can pick up items of ex railway uniforms, I remember in particular, one of the stations at the far end of the LLangollen Railway and also the Yeovil Railway Centre were selling BR Shirts and Ties, some still in their original packaging so unused, they also had a selection of BR and other TOCS pullovers, which I did buy, the older ones are pure wool, made in the UK and good quality. Ebay and other internet sites may be worth looking at too.

Thanks STEVIEBOY1. I fully intended to visit the North Yorkshire Moors Railway shop at Grosmont in the fullness of time. Been to Yeovil but I did not realise there was a railway centre in the town. Interesting journey there from Waterloo in a class 159. Seemed to remember that someone had an old London tube carriage in a field.

Hi again, The Yeovil Railway Centre I referred to, is on the disused platforms at Yeovil Junction Station, they are a very small preservation society and operate the turntable when there are main line steam charters in that area. The shop is open on Sundays and other days too if the centre is open for a main line tour or other event. Just google Yeovil Railway Centre, it's quite interesting.

You are right, there is an old London Underground Silver/grey carriage in that area, although I don't know if it's anything to do with the rail centre. There used to be some of Virgin West Coast and other IC Carriages there, but they were not there when I went through that way a few months ago.

The rail centre did do some brake van rides hauled by a super little maroon steam loco.

Yes I like the journey from Waterloo to the West of England in the 159s, nice trains although they do stop at a lot of stations.

Rgds.

Thanks for the info, STEVIEBOY1. If I am ever around that neck of the woods, I shall have to pay a visit to this Yeovil Railway Centre. Such a different way of life round there, it is like being in another country.

Was not quite sure if they were still using the 159s. The strange part about the journey is that on the way out of Waterloo, the Express units, not especially noted for their acceleration, seem to travel faster than the suburban electric stock.

Yes it's amazing in a small country like the UK, the different regions are so diferent. I like coming upto the north east and Cumbria for the mountains etc.

The 159s that we have down here on SWT are very good. I enjoy travelling on them and they do go fast. :D

Good point about Cumbria, I should go there. Anyway, I managed to find s Facebook page about Midland Mainline which was quite informative and showed a number of photos of their uniforms throughout their franchise.
