This ticket is only to be sold if you have already have a Travelcard that covers Zone 6. Valid routes would be the usual ones to London, there would be no restriction on train operating company.

Any on permitted routes between 'London Zone 6'and Brighton, departing after 0930. There's some different ideas about this, but if it's a permitted route from London Terminals you're not going to have a problem. Presumably you'll be combining it with a Zones 1-6 Travelcard?

There would be no operator restrictions, if that's a potential concern :)

Thank you for everyone's help. I would be combining it with a London Travelcard. I would probably go Gatwick Express one way and Thameslink the other, just making sure that this would be 100% alright?

See how you get on with Gatwick Express. If they give you any problems then come here and we'll fight it. :)

Some staff who work on TSGN trains branded Gatwick Express claim Travelcards are not valid on their services as it is a premium service.

At the risk of re-opening an entire cannery full of wriggling creatures, they certainly won't sell you a BZ6 to Gatwick or Brighton extension at Victoria if you tell them you want to use the express - and not at all at the dedicated express ticket office by their platforms...

And it's then that you use one of many ticket machines at the station!

Out of interest, what do you have to search for on the machines to get a BZ ticket? Do all Southern TVMs have it available for purchase?

I'll have to try it out as I've not done it for a couple of months now, but I think it's just a case of starting to type the word "Boundary" and then selecting the right zone. I think all the Southern-branded TVMs can do it, but I'm not sure about the GX-ish-branded ones. I certainly seem to remember that they used to a couple of years back.

You use the "buy tickets from another station" feature and use Boundary Zone 6 as the starting station.

I've used the Travelcard and BZ6 combination dozens of times on Gatwick Express without problems. The Travelcard works the Victoria barriers and the BZ6 ticket works the Gatwick barriers, so there's no need to interact with staff.

If you want to buy from a ticket office, insist you're sold the ticket you ask for and don't say which service you're travelling on. They will try to sell you a ticket from East Croydon because they can't be arsed to find BZ6 on their system and also don't understand the subtlety of the BZ6 ticket being valid on Gatwick Express whilst an East Croydon ticket is not.

As a slight aside, can a Boundary Zone 6 ticket be used with an Outboundary Travelcard, e.g. St Albans to Zones 1-6?

Yes it can.
Thanks, that could be useful.
Given that this thread mentions Gatex, is it required for the train to stop at the boundary station, (South Croydon in this case) when passing through, as for split ticketing, or are Day Travelcards treated the same as Season Tickets allowing end-to-end travel by any fast train?

No stop required because the ticket is zonal. That's why a ticket from BZ6 is valid on GatEx whereas one from East Croydon is not.

The boundary zone ticket is an extension of the Travelcard, it is effectively one fare and therefore Condition 19 does not come into play, so non-stop trains can be used.

I used a Stevenage - London Zones 1-6 Travelcard plus a Boundary Zone 6 - Gatwick Airport ticket on the Gatwick Express a couple of weekends ago. My travelcard failed to work the barriers both ways at Gatwick.

I was let through both times although on the return the RPIs were more interested in trying to PF a number of passengers travelling on 'Southern' tickets who had been told to board the train at Brighton due to a cancellation. After much persistence they were eventually let through.

I agree with this. The boundary ticket taken on its own has no validity whatsoever.

...and presumably the resulting ticket(s) will then be rejected by the barriers at Victoria platform 13/14?
That's not the experience of people who have used them. Most Travelcards appear work the barriers at Victoria platforms 13/14.

But for weekend travel most people 'in the know' use cheaper tickets than these, so I don't know a lot of people who use them.

168lover - when are you travelling?

That's because you should have been putting you BZ6 - Gatwick Express ticket through the barriers at Gatwick, which would have worked. The Travelcard isn't valid at Gatwick.

Thanks for the info folks. I might try to combine a 442 and a 700 trip by booking tickets to the seaside. How can I find out which GX trains are 442s and which 387s?

Probably a week day but a slight possibility of it being a saturday.

The final station in the zones that you pass through on the BML is Purley (if taking the Quarry Line) or Coulsdon South (if using the Redhill route).
