"Sixth Form students travelling by train to Queen Katherine School in Kendal had previously been eligible for a subsidised student rail pass on the Lakes Line. This meant that a yearly pass would cost around £250 for a student travelling from Windermere. Northern Rail has now decided to remove this option, leaving students to face the cost of a full adult season ticket, costing over £1000."

Has anybody any thoughts about ways of dissuading Northern Rail from adopting this approach? Or can they just do it? (Northern have just taken over from TPE.)

Thanks

Who paid the subsidy? If it was Northern themselves, then yes they probably can. It's a different business now and unless there was a clause to carry the subsidy over...

On the other hand, if it was an external body, then was the subsidy time-limited or not? That'll be the important factor here.

It's probably been subsidised by a local authority which can no longer afford it.

Now found from the local paper:

A spokesperson for Northern said: “In order to keep a fair and unbiased approach to all schools and colleges across the north of England, it was decided to withdraw this particular educational season ticket offer.

“This decision was reached on a basis that is both non-discriminatory, commercially viable and practical from a logistical point of view, across our entire Northern network.

“However, we are investigating the possibility of introducing a residents’ discount card and if the proposal is deemed to be a viable alternative, it will certainly be something we will look into.”

So it looks like a casualty of the move from TPE to Northern.

Seem to have upset a few people, our new Arriva Northern friends.

Pot and kettle - Interesting how one of their own managers was caught at another operator last week minus ticket. Allegedly.
