I just came from my local Deutsche Bahn station, attempting to buy a ticket from London to Oxford, in the past it was no problem, now to available.
Are UK tickets still available at Bruxelles Midi? As I am changing onto Eurostar, that is an option or must I buy online from a UK operator to get a good deal?
Thanks in advance.
Martin

Just buy online now and pick it up at St Pancakes when you get there.

yes, but that was not what I was hoping for. Tickets bought abroad were full flex and a lot cheaper than in Britain. London to Oxford and return for €24 on any train was a good deal.
Mind you I can understand that one wants to end that positive discrimination as locals didn't have that option.

Were these CIV tickets perhaps - only available with a Eurostar (or other international service) ticket? Maybe not as London-Oxford is still £33.50 return (including Tube transfer). Valid on any train, return within two months.

CIV gives you full protection in the event of rail related delays causing you to miss your international service. Often the tickets are significantly cheaper too - in this case it depends whether you're planning to travel in the peak or not. I don't know if these are available in Brussels, but you can get them at any UK station (you will usually need to show your Eurostar ticket).

I had a standard local ticket issued by DB the other week so I assume they must still be available!

That is surprising, as the sale staff told me they stopped selling them on the 15th December

How odd! Two things are possible I guess - firstly that working shifts does funny things to your perception of time so it may have been a little longer ago, secondly (or also) for a trip abroad I suppose it's possible the ticket was sold well in advance! Seeing them certainly sticks in your head as they were rather unusual anyway - the only other one I'd seen any time recently was an any permitted Chesterfield to London Terminals return.

I got one years ago for Gatwick Airport to Seaford, and it turned out that even with BIJ (Euro-Youth) discount (1/3 off)[1] it was more expensive than a full walk-up return bought in the UK. Though the guard's reaction to it was amusing, don't think he'd ever seen one before.

[1] I believe I shouldn't have had the discount as it wasn't part of an international rail journey.
