Hi all,

My company is shortly about to switch over season ticket loans so we all have to go through thetrainline.com. Does anyone know what their season ticket renewal policy is?

e.g. If I normally get a season ticket directly from Southwest Trains, I may be eligible for a Passenger Charter Renewal discount due to delays or void days when renewing with SWT.

Would thetrainline apply this discount as well?

The identity of the retailer should not affect void day and Charter renewal discount entitlements, in theory, as the cost is born by the declaring TOC.

Isn't the problem that the Trainline will have no way of knowing whether he already has a season ticket or not and whether he is entitled to any discount?

Oh, I thought he meant for future renewals.

Void days can be paid as refunds, so should not matter.

Renewals I think can be done at a different retailer to the one that issued the old ticket, but obviously it would be lots of unnecessary hassle normally to try and get a different TOC to obtain the correct information off the original retailer. Can't say I am 100% sure on this but I can check the iKB tomorrow.

If the OP can say when his current ticket expires and for what journey (need to be in the correct direction as stated on the ticket) then I can check iKB tomorrow to see if any renewal discount would be due. If expiring soon, my suspicion is none as the only one I am aware of that currently offers renewal discounts is GW, and not on all service groups.

As far as I'm aware, the only requirements to receive a Charter Discount (where applicable) are:

  • Renewal within 28 days of expiry of the previous ticket
  • For the same journey (though there's usually some leeway with that, as long as it's the same service group)
  • New ticket having the same duration or less

There's no requirement to renew with the same retailer as far as I can tell.

A side effect of that is that someone switching from a Monthly to an Annual won't receive a discount, but someone switching from an Annual to a Monthly would.

Why do companies insist on using Thetrainline?

Because they will get a commission from the trainline and certainly won't pay the rip off fees that Joe Public has to pay.

My own organisation uses the Evolvi system which along with the Train Line is authorised by ATOC for use by corporate travel agents. The main selling points seem to be greater enforcement of corporate travel policies (i.e. prohibit booking of certain types of tickets), additional mandatory information collected at the point of booking (e.g. purpose of journey and reason for not selecting the cheapest available ticket, if allowed), detailed management information to the organisation's finance function on booking patterns, central billing and the ability to book costs to specific jobs, and (at least in our case) the convenience of a ticket printing machine on the premises so no need to faff about with the post or ticket on departure.

No longer here
I'd be interested to see if Trainline have the functionality to honour a discount. I suspect not, but I'd welcome being surprised.

But not so good for the employee who would no longer be entitled to additional benefits such as the free weekend tickets from SWT.

It won't affect me directly at the moment, as I travel on Southern, so am entitled to delay repay...it was more my concern for other employees in my company who's TOC do not offer delay repay, but give a discount on renewal of season tickets. Would thetrainline give similar discounts when renewing this year (switching from buying directly from the TOC, to purchasing from thetrainline) and also future yearly renewals.

I would suggest that that is a question for your purchasing/procurement department/whoever is agreeing the contract with Trainline, as it will depend on the contract agreed, which may vary depending on who is negotiating.

Edit: What I was trying to say is that if Trainline do indeed offer discounts etc, they may not offer them unless your company negotiates for them. Unless prompted purchasing departments will tend to negotiate the best deal for the company, especially if they are unaware of reductions of benefits to staff.

A friend is about to do some work for a company - they've forwarded the receipt from the trainline so they can pick the tickets up - this shows that they've paid over £8 in fees on just over £200 in tickets. I'd be surprised if they got that back in commission.

Are the trainline the only company that allow pick-up on any card?

Scotrail allows pick up on any card when I book via the website.

As would I. The OP may end up needing to choose between the charter discounts and using a season ticket loan.
