Caught the 1811 Paignton to BNS XC Voyager yesterday. At Bristol at 2000 our 4 car train joined up with a 5 car voyager. Why was that and where would the other train have come from?
It's booked to do so: In previous weeks it's operated as a pair of 5-car units. As Peter Mugridge says, there are a small number of Crosscountry services which run as a pair of units over the core section of the SW-NE axis from Bristol in order to provide additional capacity, although in this case it may be just a balancing move to get the second unit back to Central Rivers at the end of the day: It will have previously worked the 16:07 Manchester Piccadilly - Bristol Temple Meads. Why was that and where would the other train have come from?
Where is Central Rivers? Thanks for the replies.
Barton under Needwood, Staffs. A couple of miles SW of Burton upon Trent, on the Birmingham - Derby line, so fairly central for the XC network.
You'll find it on realtimetrains as "Barton Under Needwood Rsmd"
Would 2 voyagers coupled together need 2 train managers on board as there is no connection between the units? Or can they operate with just one?
I believe there should be 2 but if only 1 is available then that can run as png as there is at least one member of staff in each unit. (Such as catering)
One would be fine. Non-corridor units operate all over the place doubled and even tripled up with only one guard, or even DOO.

It's not easy to miss from a passing train, but if you're struggling, just look out for the enormous Argos distribution depot with shipping containers stacked outside it. The Argos depot is next door to Central Rivers.
XC require 2 train managers as per union agreements for manning.
1S49 is almost always a double Voyager.
